M to E

>"Kinda like being on 'Wheel of Fortune'. I got a prize just for being a >contestant," Jordan replied pulling the bracelet from his pocket.

Martin gasped as he saw the bracelet. "Oh my God. Can I have a look at it?"

Jordan handed it over to him. Martin took one quick look and immeditely found the inscription. All the color suddenly left his face. He looked as if he'd seen a ghost.

"This is Emiliy's bracelet," he said, "I gave it to her for our 3 month anniversary"

"Are you sure," Zenya asked.

"I'm positive. Look, this link is even a bit crooked, from when she caught her hand in a closing elevator door, two weeks ago. We have to do something!" Martin's eyes shifted from Zenya to Jordan. "Now!"

"Calm down," Jordan replied. "I will call 'Carol' as soon as we have assembled the team. We will work something out, I promise you."

Jordan's words seemed to calm Martin down a bit. He was still staring dumbfoundedly at the bracelet, as if he could bring Emily to him, by the force of his mind only. He did the cross-sign across his chest, and pocketed the bracelet. No question about it, Martin would do anything within his powers to bring Emily home safely.

The Beta team plus Jordan was on their way to the motel, when Jordan's cellphone rang:

"Agent Stern? This is Director Mike Bintz of the Boston field office. I need to get a hold of one of your agents, Jim Reaper. Do you know where I can find him?"

"Why? What's happened?" Jordan was worried something had happened to Jim. He knew Jim was the kind of guy that could take care of himself, but still, even professionals could sometimes get out-gunned.

"Special Agent Marty Feldman was found dead in his office a few minutes ago. Jim Reaper was the last man to be seen with him."

"I can assure you that Agent Reaper has nothing to do with your agent's death, but I will ask him to call you when he gets back. Anything else?"

"Yes, Agent Reaper was carrying a leather briefcase with him, when he went in to Agent Feldman's room. When he came out 10 minutes later, he didn't have it with him. If he left it with Agent Feldman, it is probably gone by now. Feldman's safebox was broken into. Have you got any idea what it contained?"

Jordan lied: "No, not really." He had just realized that Jim was carrying the device, in an attempt to pose as Tom. He shook his head and told Director Bintz that he would have Jim call as soon as he could get a hold of him.

"We're in deep trouble now," he told the others. "Jim might have left the device with a collegue at the Boston field office for safe-keeping. The man on the phone was Director Bintz. He told me that one of his agents were shot dead in his office, a short while ago. Apparently, that agent had just had a visit from Jim, before he was killed."

"Does that mean the device is missing?" Tom asked, already knowing the answer.

"Probably," Jordan replied. "This confirms our theory that at least two groups are after the device. 'Carol' seemed to think that we still had it. Surely she would have known, if her group had their hands on the device."

"This means we can still bargain with her," Martin added. Perhaps they could use a bit of 'divide-and-conquer' here.

"I must call Jim." Jordan picked up his cellphone and dialed the number.
