(Day 2, 3:35pm, The Hunting Lodge)
>"I do," Carol replied, "put your friend on the line, and I'll put mine on."
>Jordan turned and handed the cell phone to Martin.
"Em? Is that you?"
"It's me alright. I miss you, Martin."
"Me too. How are you holding up?" Martin could feel how faint her voice was. She had been thru difficult times before, but this was different.
"As well as could be expected, I guess. When are you coming to get me?"
"Soon baby, very soon. We are meeting with your kidnappers tomorrow to work out a deal."
"OK. And Martin, Paul Kenner, check the na..." The phone went dead.
"Damnit," Martin cursed, "they cut us off. But at least she gave me a name to look into: Paul Kenner - does it ring any bells?"
"I recognize it," Leo said, "but I can't really place it."
"Same here," Jim added. "Martin, do you think your friend at the Boston PD knows anything about Kenner?"
"I doubt it, but I could access the IRS mainframe, to see if they've got anything on him"
Martin disappeard to his room for a few second and then re-emerged with his laptop. It took him less than 10 seconds to hook it up to the phone jack and dial the number to the IRS mainframe.
"They don't know I still have a password for the mainframe, so I'd appreciate it if you didn't tell anyone," he stated. He of course already knew that they wouldn't rat him out.
"Houston, we got a problem! There are 1200 Paul Kenners in the country. But wait...Here's one whose records are sealed at the highest level of security. All it says here, is that he's a resident of Falls Church, VA."
"What's in Falls Church?" Zenya asked.
"All I can think of is the JAG Headquarters," Jim replied, "but I doubt he is JAG."
"Me too," Martin said, "but Falls Church isn't that far from Jackson, VA. The NSA has a fairly large field office in Jackson."
"Who are they?" Zenya asked. She felt like a fool for asking so many questions.
"The National Security Agency is an ultra-secret Government agency," Martin replied. "They follow no other agenda, than their own. Plus, I have reason to believe the third shooter in the JFK assassination was NSA."
"Slow down a little," Vanessa said. "I thought Oswald was the only shooter and now you're talking about a third one."
"Oswald, who worked for the CIA at the time, fired three shots from the 6th floor of the Texas School Book Depository Building. At least one of them hit the President. The second shooter was standing behind a fence on th grassy hill at the edge of Dealey Plaza. Witnesses claims the shooter was Jack Ruby."
"The same Jack Ruby who then killed Oswald?" Jim asked.
"Yup. Jack Ruby ran the Carousel Club in New Orleans on behalf of the Chicago mob. President Kennedy and his brother, Attorney General Robert Kennedy were cracking down hard on the mob, so the had every reason to hate JFK. One of Ruby's bullets hit the President. Another bullet nicked the curb near James Tague and the ricochet injured him lightly."
"But what about the third shooter?" Vanessa asked.
"The third shooter was standing in a storm drain below Dealey Plaza. He fired a single shot that went through the President's elbow and lodged itself near the base of the skull."
"It stil doesn't explain why the NSA should be involved," Zenya said.
"The NSA keeps track of all the UFO sightings in this country. JFK threatened to use his State of the Nation address, after re-election, to reveal what really happened at Roswell. This was unacceptable to the NSA, so they had to kill him."
"Where do you get all this from?" Vanessa asked sceptically.
Martin immeditely became a bit more evasive. "You know, friends n' stuff."
"I hate to interupt your story," Jim said, "but we'd better get going if we want to make the next flight to LA."
"You're right," Jordan said. "Leo, take Martin and Zenya with you to create a diversion. You could scout for a good meeting place near Cambridge. Vanessa and Jim, have a safe trip."
------------
No one seemed to follow them, as Zenya drove south towards Cambridge.
"There's a Jack-in-the-Box up ahead, but perhaps that's too tacky," Martin said.
"You only suggested Jack-in-the-Box because you want a burger. Am I right, or am I right?" Zenya gave Martin a smile through the rear-view mirror.
Martin pretended to sulk for a while, but eventually he smiled back. "OK, you're right about the burger, but I still think it's a perfect meeting place. There are no buildings nearby, so we can rule out any snipers. Plus, it's close enough to the highway to make for a quick escape, if it becomes necessary."
"We'll check it out," Leo said. "I'm also kind of hungry. Normally I wouldn't go for Jack-in-the-Box, but it'll have to do for now."
