Mission 3

Stranger in a room

by Lee Sau Woon

>Jordan called out, "Stop, we're from the FBI!"

>In response, the man pulled a gun from under his jacket and fired in >their general direction. They heard the bullet ricochet off one of the >nearby lockers.

>Jordan pulled out his SIG-Sauer P226, stopped in the corridor and >fired. The man stumbled and rounded a corner ahead.

The three agents turned the corner, and found themselves facing a door, still swinging on its hedges. They pushed the door open, and saw a staircase, leading up and down. There was no sight of the fleeing figure in either direction.

"I'll go up," Jordan volunteered, "Jim, down. Vanessa, check his room."

With that, the three agents went their separate ways.

Vanessa made her way back to where they first saw the presumably Borden. Sure enough, the room which he exited from was room 221, with a tag that read

Bordan , Donald
Assistant Head, Computer Information and Systems

Vanessa tried the door, and found it unlocked. Obviously he had not intended to leave the room for long. She opened the door, and entered the room. The lights was off, and the blinds were drawn, leaving the room in almost perfect darkness except for a metal waste paper basket from which flames were emitted. The smoke from the waste paper basket choked up the whole room, and Vanessa coughed even before she took her second step.

He'll burned down the whole building with this, she thought as she tried to feel her left hand along the wall for a switch.

And felt the barrel of a gun at the the back of her head.

"I prefer the darkness, if you please." A voice spoke from behind, as she heard the door being closed. Her hand left the wall.

"Very good, Agent Lee. Now sit down." The gun nudged her towards a wooden chair that was obviously used to intimidate students. She sat down.

In the darkness, she could not see much, and it did not help that the smoke was getting into her eyes, and making her tear.

"Who are you, and what are you doing?"

The man chuckled.

"Well, Agent Lee. Don't you remember the wise old words - 'Curiousity kills the cat'?"

"I am not a cat, whoever you are. Don't you know that you are going to burn down the whole building with all this burning?"

"All this burning? Just a few important documents, my dear. To prevent them from falling into your hands, or your teammates', for that matter."

"RPG." She said. "You are trying to get rid of the evidence. "

"Smart girl. By the time the rest of your teammates got into action, all evidence will be gone from Castle Rock. Without evidence, there is simply nothing much you can do. Back to square one."

"Where are you from? DOD? CIA? Look, no matter who you are, or where you're from, we'll just track you down. And you'll pay for it."

Standing out of the direction of the smoke, he was not affected by the smoke, but Vanessa was starting to find it unbearable. She coughed, then choked.

"You'll never find me." He said, as Vanessa coughed again. "A pity, little kitty, but I think you are going to lose one of your 9 lives." He added with mocked sympathy, and then released the safety of his gun, which was still aiming at her face.

Just then, she heard the fire alarm went off for the second time for that day. She looked up just in time to see the sprinkler being activitated. And just in case to receive a hard blow on the left side of her face. Darkness dropped on her, and she fell off from the chair onto the floor, unconscious.

The man looked towards the waste paper basket, and saw that all the paper were burnt to crisp. He knew that at that very moment, all the other evidence would also be erased in all parts of Castle Rock, and that brought a smile to his face. With that, he left the room, and closed the door gently behind him.
