THE FINAL INSPECTION
The soldier stood and faced his
God
Which must always come to pass
He hoped his shoes were shining
bright
Just as brightly as his brass
"Step forward now, soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"
The soldier squared his shoulders
and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't
Because those of us who carry guns
can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays
and at times my talk was rough,
I've had to break your rules my
Lord
Because the world is awfully tough,
But, I never took a thing
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep,
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear,
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the People here,
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord,
It needn't be so grand,
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand."
There was a silence all around
the throne
Where the saints often trod
As the soldier waited quietly,
for the judgment of his God,
"Step forward now, soldier,
You've borne your burdens well,
Come walk peacefully on Heaven's
streets,
You've done your time in HELL."

I do not know who wrote this next poem except that he
was a Marine Gunny Sargent
and I remember reading it and was so moved by it
that
I copied it and placed it in my scrape book. I
tried to live up to the
ideals and goal that men placed in me as a United States
Navy Hospital Corpsman.
And I hope all other Navy Corpsman continue to live up
to it!
(if you should read this poem and know who wrote it please
contact me so that I may give credit where much credit is deserved.)
Corpsman Up!
Up at the front and
filled with fear
He pleads with God,
"Don't leave me here!"
Wounded and bleeding
and hunched with pain
Thrown on his back
in the mud and rain.
Others went down,
some hit, all scared.
No one moved; no on
dared!
We'd moved swiftly
through the paddy mire.
And then it happend;
enemy fire!
It's "Corpsman up!"
when things get hot
The nearest thng to
God we got.
"Corpsman up!" to
save a breath;
"Corpsman up!" in
the face of death.
Stop the bleeding;
treat for shock.
No time for hesitation
"Doc"
Patch him up and get
him back,
Back to the rear;
call a medivac.
Operating room well
lit and clean;
Doctors waiting, dressed
in green.
Operate with speed
and skill;
Experts with determined
will
Save lives or limbs
to save dreams
No matter how impossible
it seem
Work on in sweat and
mud and grime;
To save a life...
there's not much time!
You joined the Navy
to learn your trade.
And went to school
and made the grade.
It's "Corpsman up!"
when rounds are flying;
"Corpsman up!" when
men are dying.
You're one of us,
a grunt with grit.
Like it or no, you
just can't quit.
"Corpsman up!" step
ofut of ranks!
"Corpsman up!" ---
and accept our thanks.
