| Perspectives, there are so many of them. Most people, me included, tend to believe so hard in their perspective that they often change that belief into fact. This is something that is not isolated to just a few people, whole groups can be guilty of this. The word for this is dogma. The scariest thing about dogma is that nothing is safe from it, not even science, which is generally believed to be based soley on fact. |

My gripe here is about feminists. All my life I have heard feminists bitch and moan about the hegemony of the male in society, and whereas, at one point in time their discourse was neccessary and beneficial(for I realize that as a female I would not have the ability to dictate what I am about to without early feminists addressing the fact that there was a problem). However, I now resent current discourse as anachronistic bantering(I realize this is mainly the kind of banter spewed forth by the media and it is apt to be highly skewed--prehaps it is not really feminists as individuals or a group that I have a problem with but the media's protrayal of their viewpoint--if that is the case, then realize it is that attitude I am attacking when I use the term feminist/feminism). I also resent the usurpation of my voice into a generalized outcry of the downtrodden woman, a creature, for whom I have no personal identification with or sympathy for(if someone wants to be a victim let them--but do NOT drag me into victim status with them). As a person in this world, I am able to assume my own voice(and have and will continue to do so)and extract from this world what I want to. As a person I can accept the way things are and complain with a martyr's tongue about how I am not given my due(implying that someone has the power over me to give it) OR I can cast aside such as fabrications produced solely by society (and passively accepted by both male and female) and enforced through such artifical means as mores, taboos, etc--in other words I can treat them as the myths that they are. The truth, as I see it, is that power is not given but assumed. And that the only thing that seperates those in power from the powerless is the mere belief that they are seperated, that nothing can be done, or more importantly that something else has to be done before the powerless can share the power with the powerful. Another way to put this is, that it is my belief that this bitching and moaning about the tyranny of men over women translates into waiting to be given the power(equality) by men(giving them even more power). This delays what can, at this moment, be assumed by any individual who wants it. A woman can sit in the office and play by the man's rules and complain over any small detail as being a slight against her and cry like a damsel in distress to the company, the law, or the media about the rampant sexism in this world or she could assume the power, take what she wants and leave some other sap to play the game. That's what I try to do, though not in an office(that is yet another game for another sap to play). |
