SPITTED AORTA WEBZINE-Interview With DRAIN OF IMPURITY

1) Hi Batu, first of all tell the D.O.I bio for the ones that don’t know the band.
Hi Oguz,
I was thinking to form a band like this..finally at the end of 2000 we started the D.O.I project. At the beginnning it was a one-man project and I played all the instruments and did all the recordings. After on february 2001 Basar Cetin joined the band as the new guitarist.

2) What things have changed as Basar joined the band, i mean the musical differences for D.O.I.?
As the first step we used the tracks of my own on the splits. The early compositions were more chaotic and has a bit more raw sound, based on old school riffs. We add different styles to the sound of D.O.I. with the entrance of Basar into the band. That is, after a US style riff cames a Swedish melodic riff and things like that. We developed a step further technically.

3) You’ve released two splits with Stench Of Necropsy and Cranitripsy. Do you think you’ve catched the musical level that you desire in those and why is it so that last 2-3 seconds of the tracks couldn’t be heard?
Yeah, as i said before we used the tracks i solely recorded. Those were the first recording

trials of mine and the fade-out thing was not so professional. İ mean the tracks cut off suddenly because of my fault but it doesn’t bother me. That is, the new recordings are more professional compared with the old ones.

4) So how were the local and foreign responses for the splits?
It’s impossible to find them in Turkey at the moment. Especially die hard grind fans order these by mail. I’m so satisfied with them. We’ve recorded the tapes with two sick grind bands. You know those are exactly do-it-yourself stuff inspired by pure underground spirit. And also the responses from outside ,as you know, are more intense.

5) “Tortured flesh mixed” riffs sound a bit different , some experimental influences. I call it experimental gore death. How did you feel when you’re composing stuff like that, i mean you try different dimensions in your music?
D.O.I. doesn’t limit its music in certain styles ,since it’s extremely brutal we try all kinds of innovations. So was the reason we’ve started tis project. I didn’t have the chance to try this kind of experimental stuff in Cenotaph. The following releases include that sort of tracks... We enjoy listening that kind of shit. I call it “the answer from Turkey to the Avulsed’s

cybergore” (Ottoman slap hahah).

6) “Sordid acts of torture” ‘s record quality is well. You mastered it in your own home studio ha? Have you met with with any difficulties?
Yeah, we did all the recordings at home. At the beginning i’m not so experienced in recording. In the course of time, i learned more and experienced about it. I think most of them are more professional than studio recordings. I gathered the needed equipment instead of spending the money in studios. We’re satisfied with that recording quality althoughit’s home made.

7) I think so. Tracks in the cd were composed after basar joined the band?
Yeah, before the recording i want Basar to compose for D.O.I. And he came to Austria for recording and we used the tracks thathecomposedin mcd. But we cancel some parts and add new ones. The last 2 tracks were tuned by me. I playedthe guitars in the sixth track. The rest are Basar’s.

8) I suppose the recordings and the drum programming were all done in three days. Am i right?
We can record it in a shorter time but all were completed in three days by the way. Anyhow, i finished all the drum programming before the recording. Other instruments, mix and vocals were recorded in 3 days.

9) Your session drummer is your other band Cenotaph’s Cem. I think Cenotaph and Drain of Impurity will have gigs together :)?
Yeah, our drummer in live shows is Cem. Of course in the future D.O.I. will share the stage with Cenotaph. on september 30th , D.O.I. may be on stage as the sub-band of Dying Fetus, Crytopsy and Vader (because of the terrorist attack in USA, this concerts were cancelled). If this happens so , it’ll be very cool.

10) So let’s talk about some about the Drain Productions. So why did you choose starting a new label instesad of working with the actual ones?
After recording the mcd we’ve send our promo packages to the related labels. But the answer was no. So we decided running our own label and drain productions was exposed. But meanwhile i was also dealing with distributing stuff. We’re now carrying our operations under Drain Prod.

11) How are the things goin’ with Drain pro.? Give the contact adresses to the bands or people that are interested ?
Untill now we’ve only released only Drain of Impurity mcd. But for the future projects all brutal bands can contact with us. Our aim is not releasing so much stuff. Few but quality. Our new website is online now . Thanks for your great work on the site.

13) You have a very huge distro list man. How are the trades goin’ these times?
Yeah, nearly everyday i get something. İt’s getting even larger than ever so that i can’t find enough place to put them haha. Generally we collect not-available or sold-out demos and cds for the die hard fans.. Nevertheless we have discount prices for the Turkish fans because of the economic crises in Turkey.

14) Are there any new songs, and the follwing release will again available from drain productions or from another label?
We have 4 new songs , but only guitar and bass parts are completed , drum and bass parts and also mixs have not finished yet. Again it’s absolutely brutal death metal. I think those tracks will be used in the up coming split 7ep with Fleshgrinder and Drogheda.. Probably the following full-length will be released from Drain Pro. And maybe the next Cenotaph cd .

15) So Basar’s other band Cidesphere’s also be out from Drain?
They want to release it from Drain pro but nothing has become definite. We’ll decide according to the new record they want. Also we think of old tracks of F.D.C. ,that were not recorded before , to release under Drain pro in cd format..

16) Did you use vew vocal styles in D.O.I. different than Cenotaph. And Whose idea was the Damnable like guitar solos?
As i said before we try new ideas with D.O.I. and also a new vocal style , not so deep

growls as before. But the brutality is on the top and sometimes you can hear growling vocals in same tracks and also some kind of screams. The solos were the idea of Basar. I’ m not a soloing fan but short and sick solos conformed the music well i think.

17) The songs don’t have any lyrics , only the track names and still, we can call it as “gore”?
Yeah we don’t write any lyrics but vocals are not improvized . I mean the timing of growls were planned before and recorded on their original parts in the recording sessions. Also in a live show the vocals are the same as in cd. I think D.O.I. mcd is not a goregrind thing but brutal and fast death metal sometimes comes goregrindy parts also.

18) I think the cover was done by Jake of Tales from Uranus. Did you exactly satisfied with it , i mean it’s a bit funny thing. What’s your opinions ?
Yeah, Jake scored the cover,he has an online comics webzine named as Tales From Uranus. His drawings are really sick. I told him the title of the mcd and described the atmosphere reflected on the cover i want. And after a few weeks , he come with it..yeah we’re satisfied ..but the following covers will be different, darker and sick..

19) Are you carrying the distribution only by yourself or do you co-operate with other distros?
There are lots of distros and labels distributing our mcd. Repulse, Morbid, Obliteration, Bizarre Leprous Prod etc. And many more. But fans interested with it can also contact me.

20) From now on, wil you live in Austria and what are the future projects of D.O.I.? Can we hear Cenotaph and D.O.I. in the same live show?
Yeah i’m in Austria. I come Turkey for studio workings and live shows. Of course it’s possible to see cenotaph and D.O.I. on the same gig.
