Maybe you haven’t heard about Necrophagist so much but it’s one of the best brutal death metal acts emerged recently in the scene and if you haven’t listened them yet , you really miss a lot. Their first full-length “Onset...”  is a MUST! Don’t wait anymore and get it. This interview was done with Muhammed (mainly guitars/vocals, all the instruments in the “Onset...”—this man is a genius!), the headman of Necro, live with yahoo messenger. We think you’ll enjoy it!

spitted aorta : How is it going man? First, begin with the latest news about Necro and the current line-up?

necrophagist :
Thanks guys. I'm fine. What I can tell about Necro is that we cannot rehearse that often because of our university studies. Now we’re on vacation and soon will work on the new songs. I wrote several new tracks. The current line-up is:
Bjoern Vollmer/guitar
Julien/bass
Daniel/drums
And of course I am on guitars and vocals. 4 new tracks can be considered as ready. It's just that I still to write second guitar-, bass- and drumlines. I will complete these as soon as possible and we will play them in the upcoming concerts. We wonder whether the audience will like the new stuff or not. The new tracks are more melodic, but yet brutal and fast of course. Our new sound will be very interesting. Wait till ya hear it!

spitted aorta :
“Onset...”  was one of the greatest albums we have listened to so far, both of us appreciate your music. All the tracks were produced and arranged and all the instruments ( including drum machines) were played by you, briefly it was a one man production, am I right? Why did you work?

necrophagist :
Thank you, guys. Hearing these kind of words always make me pleased. I did “Onset...” almost completely alone. Just some bass tunes were performed by the old bass guitarist. We are still not on good terms with him and because of him having Necro ripped off his name didn’t appear in the album. I explained the reasons why on our website. As you mentioned, it’s difficult to find musicians playing this kind of extreme music .I think the situation is the same in Turkiye (spitted aorta -Yeah, we experienced the same difficulties in the past and still haven’t find any member to form the band), as here in Germany. But right now I'm happy to have completed the line-up and they’re really good musicians. In fact, Bjoern is studying classical guitar at the university and I'm sure he will play some outstanding guitar solos on the upcoming releases. He also played the guitar solo in “Extreme Unction”.

spitted aorta :
How did the underground react on this album so far? What's been written about Necro? We haven’t met any interviews except a few in German, what are the reasons – the lack of promotion or the weaknesses of your label?

necrophagist :
It's true, interviews or reviews haven't been carried that much with Necro, sometimes I spoiled and sometimes because the lack of time I couldn’t find the opportunity to do interviews. But nowadays the album is well-known to the underground. Nearly 2000 copies were sold. Of course , this isn't not enough. But it somehow has to have reached far more people, napster and the others have provided that. I receive 10 to 20 e-mails in a weak, not so bad I think. And the mp3's on our site are downloaded about 100 times each every week! Besides our label, Adipocere did not promote well. But I hope this case will change in the near future in favour of Necro.

spitted aorta :
Can you tell the exact release date of the new album and the label it'll be released on or will that be the big surprise for fans?

necrophagist : Currently, I can’t say anything about the new label because there is nothing certain yet. But the next album will be out in summer 2003 I presume, maybe earlier. I hope in the mean time “Onset...” will be released as a new edition including the tracks of the 1995 demo as a bonus. And maybe Necro can be involved in some tours or festivals during this time.

spitted aorta : Will it be possible to see Necro on stage in Türkiye?

necrophagist : I really want to play in my home country and certainly we’ll do. If our label doesn’t help, we’ll check something on our own, with the help of people like you I think we can manage that. I mean, I'm not a foreigner, am I? Besides, it's a shame that we haven't been able to setup a gig or 2 in Turkiye, I think I will contact some people on my own, since my countrymen don't offer nothin...But you guys did promise to help, didn't you ;-)

spitted aorta :
Again, the “Onset...” was one of the greatest albums we’ve (Oguz & Kerem) listened so far in both musical and technical standpoints and holds it's place in our list-of-favourites of all times in this genre. It makes itself listen again and again and still without annoying the listener. How much time do you spend practicing and do you have a musical background?

necrophagist : My purpose is to create songs to make people feel the way you’ve mentioned above. Besides, the tracks of “Onset...” are pretty old now. One of the things I hate most is getting bored after listening to a cd 2 or 3 times. In fact I don’t spend much time for practicing or music at all. I only play the guitar when I want to write new songs. And I don’t have any musical education.

spitted aorta :
What are you listening to nowadays and are there any new bands you recommend strongly?

necrophagist : I bought Dream Theater’s latest album last weekend and I’ll listen to it right after the interview. I don’t like D.T. that much , just wanted to buy something new and different (I think I'm buying 5 CDs a year). Spastic Ink – the new band of Ex-Watchtower guitarist – is one of my favorites. If you want to listen to technical music, try it. I also like Control Denied’s album and some of Death’s. I can’t remember more than those, clearly I am not a good listener. Have you heard DEADBORN before?
spitted aorta : No, why?
NECRO : It was a joke, of course you can’t have listened to it before. It features former Necro members. After having left the last line-up, I proposed them to form a new band not to waste the experience they gained through Necrophagist and I was right. They have learned a lot in Necro! I hope they’ll come out with good works in the future.

spitted aorta :
Are you interested in different music styles like jazz or classical or whatever it is? If so, to what extent do they influence Necro’s music?

necrophagist : I’m interested in somewhat classical music and I think some of them may provide some influence. Sometimes I listen to pop music on radio when driving. One's head doesn’t take blast beats all the time, does it? (spitted aorta : Yeah, sometimes it makes you dazed!:))

spitted aorta :
Recently most of the new bands try to imitate the US style bands. In fact there are really good ones among them but they play the same things in the same way heard lots of times before. Only a few try something new or experimental (of course, still brutal and fast as hell). What do you think about the current situation of the underground and especially the current US scene?

necrophagist : I completely agree with you. There isn’t any band playing different or new things, maybe Nile tries to Their lyrics and music are a bit different. They came up with a new idea in some aspects. As I said before, Deadborn may come out with a good and maybe different work. Also the same for the US scene...

spitted aorta : Which city are you from in Turkiye? Any friends and relatives here? Do you come for holidays?

necrophagist :
I’m from Trabzon. Of course I have relatives there, especially in Trabzon and Ankara. The last time I visited Turkiye was 4 years ago. But after attending university, I couldn't find enough time for holidays. I work in the vacation to make a living and the rest of the time deal with Necro-stuff. But I think of making a trip to Turkiye in 2003.

spitted aorta : Do you want to play something different in a side project that you cannot try in Necrophagist?

necrophagist :
Yeah, but I don’t have enough time for that. Sometimes I think about playing some more melodic death metal-stuff. But what’s the use? In fact, I’m satisfied with the music I play in Necro. As I said before I’m trying to write melodic tunes but of course still brutal as hell...

spitted aorta : Do you write the compositions as you feel or try to be influenced by brutality and extremity?

necrophagist :
I play the music I feel of course but I keep in mind that I play death metal, so the brutality comes by itself. Anyway usually drums designate the brutality and speed of the music. So you can make a song based on a melodic riff brutal with hyper blasting drum-work.

spitted aorta : Now, tell us about the new Necro members. Are they qualified and good musicians? Who will write the new songs?

necrophagist : The new tracks are written by me so far, but the new members are very good musicians and I hope the new guitarist will appear with his own songs one day. For the present, I try to integrate them to Necro’s sound. There mustn’t be differences in terms of quality between my compositions and theirs'. By the way it will be easier for me because it needs much time and energy to create a new song. I’m working on the new track when we are talking in the same time.

spitted aorta : Tell us about the upcoming shows.

necrophagist :
We will play at the Fuck the Commerce festival and then do 2 gigs in Italy.

spitted aorta : With which bands will you share the stage?

necrophagist : We will play with Italian death metal bands , one of them is Mindsnare I think. Nowadays I try to organize the tour comprising shows in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland and Czech Republic. It will last 10 days. I will explain the details in our website. We think about playing in Italy again at the end of the year. Maybe we can come to Turkiye from there. At the same time, I try to organize a 3 week US tour, friends in Creation is Crucifixion is dealing with it...

spitted aorta : Thanks a lot for this great interview and good luck! Last words please...

necrophagist :
Thank you guys for the interview. I hope Necro will reach freaks in all parts of the world and we expect to play in Turkiye. The new Necro sound will be a bit different and the next album will be greater than “Onset...” .That’s all and thanks again....
