This happened when I was a kid in 1964 in the town of Normal, Illinois. I was an amateur astronomy buff as a hobby and spent a lot of time lying in a lawn chair in the back yard studying the stars. One night during the summer when I was about eight years old, I was lying in the back yard as usual, looking at stars more or ess to the north. I suddenly noticed almost directly overhead a ring of red and blue or blue-green lights with a dark interior that blocked out the stars. There were, as I recall, six lights total, evenly spaced in a circular pattern, alternate red and blue. The object was moving very slowly, apparently from the direction I had been looking at stars before I had noticed it, but I had not seen it approach. It just suddenly was above me. It took what seemed like several minutes as it very lowly moved to the south, directly over the house. As it passed over the house, I could see reflections of the lights off of the television antenna on the roof. I estimate now from the angles the lights would have had to reflect that the object was probably no more than 15 to 20 feet above the roof. Assuming that is correct, then the size of it was probably about 20 to 30 feet diameter. As it passed over the house, I ran around to the front yard to continue watching it. I had to take my eyes off it while I was running. When I got around to the front yard and looked for it again, it was gone! There was a clear view across some fields to the south, where it would have gone, but I didn't see it. Considering the speed at which it was moving, and the direction, I should have been able to see it for quite some time. It just disappeared as quickly as it came. I have no serious conventional explanation for this incident, and it's been on my mind ever since.
