Hecto Gallery

Mae Strelkov was born in China of English missionary parents just before World War I and passed away after suffering a stroke at the beginning of the year 2000. She spent her last several decades living on a ranch in Argentina, where she produced multicolored hecto paintings such as the ones on this site. Generously providing artwork and writing to science fiction and fantasy fans around the world, she was the recipient of a special fund to permit her to travel to the United States in 1974 and meet many of her fans in person.

Hectography is a relatively simple printing process in which ink (usually from a carbon master) is laid down on a tray of gelatin, and transferred from there to paper one sheet at a time. Mae painted in inks directly onto the master, then transfered the image to the gelatin--which she often made herself by boiling bones...In later years Mae's hectographic efforts were hampered by the scarceness of the necessary dyes, and she turned to paitning in acrylics.
