Midvinterblot (Midwinter Offering)
Midvinterblot
Carl Larsson, 1915

A Swedish King is about to be sacrificed to ensure the survival and prosperity of his people.
While attendants blow Lur horns, the king is drawn forward on a gilded sledge. A Sami
Shaman and Volva-women sing magical songs as the Godhi raises a ceremonial Thor's
Hammer to consecrate the offering. Following the King, you can see his household retainers
armed and carrying shields. A yew tree grows beside the Hof. The Gothi in the red cloak holds
a knife with which to sacrifice the willing king, who in a state of ecstasy looks forward to eternal
life in Asgard, with his Gods.
This painting was commissioned by the Swedish Museum as a mural. It is quite enormous,
and Larsson thought it his best work. However, because of the controversial subject matter,
it was not installed in its proper place in the Museum until recently, although it was painted
in 1915!

The Sacral King, ecstatic, throws off his foxfur robe, ready for the knife, as the one-eyed Gothi consecrates the sacrifice.
