Chakras are, psychic centers on a persons body. They can be used for
changing pure energy into different forms, and to connect the
'four bodies'. (Spiritual, astral, mental, and pysical.) They are
also associated with acu-puncture.

The concept of chakras comes from many religious sources and today is
still prevalent in many eastern philosophies. A chakra is an energy
center. To some it is an area of the individual that can be opened
to receive psychic energy from the surrounding universe. To others
it is a storage center of spiritual power that exists within each
of us.

Chakras are located along what are called the 'nadies' and follow
the nervous system up and down the spinal cord. There are
seven major chakras, and these are connected by three major
nadies. These major nadies are all parallel. The left is called
the 'ida' nadi. (Yin characteristics.) The middle is called the
'sushumna'. (Neutral charateristics.) The Right is called the
'pingala' nadi. (Yang characteristics.)

Difference between Yin and Yang characteristics:

Yin - The Left Side

  • Verbal

  • Analytic
  • Symbolic
  • Abstract
  • Temporal
  • Rational
  • Digital
  • Logical
  • Linear

The Yin side is the side that thinks things through, has to have reasons etc.

Yang - The Right Side

  • Nonverbal

  • Synthetic
  • Concrete
  • Analogic
  • Nontemporal
  • Nonrational
  • Spatial
  • Intuitive
  • Holistic

The Yang side is the side that acts on impulse, and doesn't need reasons. (Woman's intuition, for example, would be a Yang quality.)

The Base Chakra

In eastern philosophy this is known as "Muladhara". This is usually
associated with the colour red and the base of the spine. It
represents the physical, earthly self. It's associated with our
instincts and primal nature and is sometimes called the root of
our being.

The Sacral Chakra

Also called the solar plexis chakra or "Manipura". It is associated
with the colour orange and with the navel area. It is linked to
sexuality, intimacy and fertility.

The Spleen Chakra

This is called "Svadhisthana" This is associated with the spleen
and the colour yellow. It represents our self identity, purpose,
destiny and will power.

The Heart Chakra

This is known as "Anahata" This is associated with the colour green
and with the heart (surprise, surprise!). It represents compassion
and understanding.

The Throat Chakra

This is associated with (wait for it ...) the throat. It's eastern
name is "Vishuddhi". It's colour association is blue. It is
associated with speech, communication, creativity and self expression.
It is also associated with listening and with mediation.

The Third Eye Chakra

Known in the east as "Ajna", this is associated with the middle of the
forehead, and the colour purple. This is the approximate location
of the pineal gland, an organ which scientists still don't fully
understand. It is associated with intuition, telepathy, dreams and
memory.

The Crown Chakra

The eastern name for this is "Sahasrata". This is associated with the
top of the head (some would place it actually several inches above
the head). It's "colour" is white (actually it's ultraviolet, but
since this is invisible to the human eye, white is a good
approximation). It is associated with self-realization, fulfillment
and enlightenment.

Activating the Chakras

The idea behind activating the chakras is to tune the mind into all
levels of consciousness, thereby utilizing it's total capacity and
amplifying it's psychic energy.

The chakras are often open by a mixture of visualization and meditation.
The magician imagines energy being drawn up from the earth and
through his or her body, which acts as a sort of psychic energy
conductor. As it passes through each chakra it causes the chakra
to glow in it's appropriate colour. As the crown chakra is reached
the energy is often visualized as emerging from the head and
dispersing into the surrounding atmosphere.

Some magicians report feeling a kind of tingling sensation when they
are doing this. This could be similar to the feeling you get when
you place your hand on a television screen.

It is important when the ritual is over to close down one's chakras.
This is because when the chakras are open the magician is very
sensitive to psychic forces and can therefore be overwhelmed by
psychic overload if the chakras remain open for a long period of
time. The chakras can be closed done by reversing the method
described above. The magician visualizes the energy flowing
downwards back to earth, which each chakra growing dim as it is
deactivated.
