Chapter 26

From behind the door was the sarcastic giggling.  Legacy turned around to face the door, her jaws tensed.

“Stop this giggling.” said Legacy.  “It isn’t going to get you anywhere.”

The giggling ceased and the door opened slowly.  A man peeked into the room.  “Here’s the legacy.” Death sang.  “Each of our meeting had been fun.” Death bowed to the group.

“Cut to the chase.” said Legacy.  “What is your purpose here?”

“My purpose…” Death smiled. “Someone is supposed to meet me tonight but for the first time, I don’t know who.”

“Hitchcock, perhaps.” Nick muttered under his breath.

“Perhaps but then perhaps you.” replied Death.

Legacy looked at Salome in alarm.  It wasn’t the thought of Nick being chosen but what it is most likely to come… that Death had came for Derek.  There is going to be one problem for Death if that is going to happen. thought Legacy.  It’s not Derek’s time yet.

“If you’re thinking of taking Derek,” said Legacy. “you got another thing coming.”

“What will that be?” asked Death.

    “A challenge.” said Legacy.

    “Legacy!” exclaimed Derek.

    “What?” replied Legacy.

Derek gave her a pleading look. Please don’t do this. he begged.  Don’t do this!  His heart started to ache.  Don’t.

“I’m sorry, Derek.” said Legacy.  “I must do my duty.”

“To hell with your duty!” exploded Derek.  “I’ll be damned if I let you do this!”

“Shall we go to another room?” asked Death.  “This man is distracting the challenge.”

    “Legacy!” pleaded Derek.

Legacy didn’t say anything.  Instead, she opened the door and walked out.  Death followed her.

Derek collapsed in tears.  “Please no.” he prayed.  “Please don’t take away the one I love.”  He bowed his head and continued to cry.

“The challenge should be interesting.” Death suddenly said.

    “Why is that?” asked Legacy.

“You have someone who love you.” replied Death.

“Not in a romance sense.” said Legacy.

“Are you blind?” laughed Death.  “Have you not seen Derek’s pleas?”

Legacy looked at him, startled.  “And have you not realized your action in challenging me?” continued Death.  “Only people who do this love the others very much.”

“I am doing my duty.” replied Legacy, stiffly.

“Duty!” laughed Death.  “I don’t think so.”

“Shall we continue on with the challenge?” asked Legacy.

“The only challenge we will be doing is in this room.” Death pointed at the library door.

“Library?” asked Legacy.  “Why the Library?”

“It’s a room of knowledge.” answered Death.  “I shouldn’t have to answer that question.”

Death held the door opened and Legacy went through it.  A game board was set up on the middle of the table and she recognized it as Scrabble.

“Scrabble?” said Legacy with her eyebrows raised.

“Yes, Scrabble.” replied Death, patiently.  “I need fun in my so-called life.”

“That’s a first.” said Legacy with a smile.

“Yup!” replied Death.  “If you win, Derek doesn’t have to go.  If you lose, you will have to go.”

Legacy nodded.  “Very well.” said Legacy.

He took out a piece from a velvet-covered bag and passed it to her which she did the same.  They looked at the pieces and placed them on the board.  Death’s piece said A and Legacy’s said C.  The game had began.
