The Second Battle of the Marne

It was in World War One. The Germans were pushing forward into France, the British were opposing them. This had already been fought once and the troops were tired.

The British troops were finally divided with the Scots taking one day of fighting, the English the next. The Scots put up a fine resistance to the German push, but lost many men - among them, their piper. Exhausted at the end of their fight, they went back to their bivouack area for their day of rest.

The next morning as the English were preparing to engage the enemy, the Scots were alerted by the sound of pipes. Looking up into the air, they were surprised to see their piper marking time in the air above them as though waiting for them to follow.

As if in a trance, the Scots began to march forward, following the ghostly piper. They pushed the Germans back and regained the ground which had been lost.
