Originally a 4-door wagon, 383 Cubic inch with
3 speed pushbutton transmission.
This vehicle has had a major amount of
time and effort put in to turn it into an unique people carrier.
The wagon is my own innovation, since having done it, I have come across another one that I have personally seen, but have been told that Years ago that there was one featured in a hot rod magazine of some sort. As far as I know, Ma MoPar did not make a 2-door B-body or C-body wagon after 1961, and the 61 was more on the lines of a panel delivery, I don't think that it had any seats behind the front one. |
Mine started life as a 440 4-door, black 383 typewriter, 6-passenger wagon. The main body of the wagon was not altered, the door opening area of a 4-dr, and a 2-dr is the same. The door post of the 4-dr was removed, as well as all four doors. Next came the donor car, a 63 Polara 2-dr HT ( don't worry it was in a lot worse shape than yours when you started on it) the hard tops doors were then mounted on the wagon, which is a direct bolt on as they both use the same front fenders, and the same door hinges. Next approximately 30 inches of the HTs side was removed by drilling out the spot welds and cutting the body about 2 inches behind where I figured that the back of the 4-dr stopped at, this piece included the dr. jam, rocker panel, and rear window area. This piece was then placed in the opening on the side of wagon. This section was then trimmed and molded in. The chrome trim for HT popped right onto the drip molding of the four door without any modification, and thus there was no changes to the wheel well openings or the roof line of the wagon. The Polara side trim was then added to the side of wagon, only piece that had to be modified was the rear quarter pieces which were about 3/4 of an inch to long, which was easily trimmed off the front edge of it where it met the door. |
The buckets seats came out of a 65 coronet 500, and I purchased a console out of a 62 Polara 500. New carpeting came from J.C.Whitneys, and seat interior came from Legendary ordered it for a 63 Polara 500, ordered it black and red which was not an original color combination for Chrysler vehicles, but it was made up with the correct material for that vintage of vehicle. I then had a professional upholster friend of mine come 1700 miles to my place and install it in wagon, buckets were no problem, as they are the same except for the design sewn into the different year cars, however the back seat had to have covers cut down to fit the wagon seat. The engine is the original 383 with about 100K on it, and as far as I know has never had the bottom end of it opened up. , I cleaned the engine compartment up, as well as engine, and got out the spray cans of paint. replaced the hoses and belts, added electronic ign. and a dual-four inline manifold off of a late fifties MoPar, hand made the throttle and kick-down linkage to fit wagon. |
I really enjoyed motoring around your website, knew most of the tech info that you had on it, but still like going over it as a refresher course, as I am getting to the age where I know that I know something, but can't quite remember what it was that I knew. Enjoyed your guests replies to the site, especially the young gal and her Jinx. wished that she was closer to my area, as I would have gladly tried to help her get her ride going again, and know that it could have been done for a little bit of nothing, just today, was offered two different polys with trans attached for 100 dollars each, and installation is only a matter of a getting together for a weekend. |
