1993 Z-28 Knock Sensor Removal

Begin with the motor and coolant fluid cool. Raise the car enough to get underneath it and secure it so it won't fall. Note: while doing this, some coolant will drain out of the block. However, it won't be much.

1- Locate the knock sensor on the bottom of the passenger side of the engine block.

2- Disconnect the electrical connection from the sensor. It "pinches" off.

3- Unscrew the sensor and replace it with a brass radiator pit-cock (apply teflon tape on the threads).

4- Strip about 2 inches of insulation off the end of at least an 8 gauge wire. Make sure you have a length of wire about 3 feet long.

5- Wrap the stripped wire strands around the threads of the sensor.

6- Slid a small hose clamp over the wire strands to secure the wire strands to the sensor thread. (the sensor is grounded in the block by the threads. In this step, you are preparing a ground for the sensor.)

7- Find an appropriate place to ground the other end of the wire. There is an excellent place on the passenger side inner fender where a few other wires are grounded.

8- Plug the electrical connector back into the sensor.

9- Wrap the sensor, connector, and hose clamp with duct tape to insulate it. Find a place to secure the sensor (now duct taped) to something so it won't hit anything. I found a wire loom going to the starter wires to secure mine. The object of this is to keep it from hitting anything. If it hits something, the ECM will interpret this as "knock" and will retard the timing.

10- That's it. Now you have a 100% desensitized Knock sensor. As long as the sensor it grounded, no SES light will come on.

11- Crank the engine and recheck the fluid level.

12- Be sure to use premium fuel.
