Trans Follies....

Event 1

There is a loud popping sound in the hump beside my leg when I hit the gass hard. I am in belief that it is the Transfer Case chain slipping. I look into getting a new chain and find it cheaper to get a whole new-to-me transfer case.

I locate a transfer case for sell for $100 in Florence, Alabama. Erik and I plan lots of time in advance to go down and pick the thing up. The day finally arives and we are psyked about the road trip. I call the guy earlier that day from work to make sure everything is ready to go. It is. Sometime between when we leave work and arive 3 hours later in Florence, the T-case got stolen from behind the guy's shop!

He appologized for our inconvenience and offered to pay us gas money home. I believe we accepted. It was a long day. Back to square 1.

Event 2

I go to the MTTR site and post that I am in need of a Quadratrac transfer case. I get two offers, one from Knoxville TN and the other from right here in Cookeville TN. I manage to talk the guy in Cookeville down to $80. He threw in the front driveshaft that was attatched to it for free. The transmission keeps killing the engine whenever I tried to give it gas in reverse so I believed that it needed rebuilding. Since the T-Case has to come off to take the transmission out, I figure it would be a primo time to have someone else do the work. :)

Transfer Case in hand, I begin to call transmission shops. I call around Cookeville and get prices ranging from $900 to about $1700 to rebuild the transmission. I hear about a transmission shop in Winchester, TN with a great reputation(which shall remain nameless), so I call them and they price me ~$700 to rebuild the transmission AND put in a shift kit. I think I would have been stupid to pass up this great deal, I think.

I finally convince Joe to haul the Jeep down to the transmission shop in Winchester to get it worked on. They tell me it will be about a week till they are done. After three weeks it was ready to go.

On the way to Erik's house, which is near by, it would die everytime it slowed below 5mph. I find this very troubling and go back to the transmission guy the next day and complain. He blames my engine. Says it needs a tune up REALLY BAD, and it does.
