The Vigilant's Cross is a 100 feet reinforced concrete cross at the Vigia Hill, north to Ponce Downtown. Is visible near from everywhere when visiting Ponce. Was built in 1984 by the Ponce City Government as a monument to all the Vigilants (watchmen), which served protecting the city against pirates and enemies attacks in the XIX century. The original lookout post consisted in a wooden mast and a little house. The vigilants, after recognized certain ships, looking the ships through an old telescope, displayed flags on the mast to advice the military authorities about the origin and type of the incoming ships. We can compare the old cross to modern day defense radar. The cross was in use by the Ponce Spanish government since 1801 to 1898, when due to the Spanish-American War, Spain was compel to cede Puerto Rico to the United States.

Today you can get inside the arms of the modern cross by an elevator to see a wonderful view of Ponce City . If you want to know how Ponce is, you must see the view at the Vigilant's Cross (Cruceta del Vigia)
