Greg Murphy's first full year in V8 Supercar racing, saw him win three
rounds of the
Australian Touring Car Championship, score 4 pole positions and start from
the front row in 8 of the 10 rounds.
A debut Championship title was a possibility for the 25 year old Melbourne-based
Kiwi but for some mechanical
problems early in the series. Despite this, he finished 4th and his storming
conclusion to the Championship
suggests he'll be hard to beat in the major endurance events.
Now, he teams once more with Craig Lowndes, to defend the Sandown and Bathurst titles, the pair won last year.
Despite his age, Greg has been racing for more than a decade, coming up
through the development formulae of
karts, Formula Ford and Formula Holden and twice won the New Zealand Gold
Star Championship and the Jim
Clark Memorial Trophy.
Highlights of his career to date have been his win in the AMP 1000 at Bathurst
and coming second in class in a
Porsche at Le Man last year.
Greg's goal is a career in open wheelers in Indy cars and recently (August),
successfully tested an Indy Lights car
in the USA. While that remains a dream, Murphy's primary aim is the endurance
races here in Australia and a
continuation with the Mobil Holden Racing Team in 1998.
