INTERIOR MODIFICATIONS

This page contains pictures of the interior of my 1993 Grand Cherokee Laredo. There are many aftermarket modification that were done in the last six years. My system has evolved drastically, my tastes have changed from being a super basshead, enjoying four 15" subwoofers and 1600 watts of pure slamming bass.... to a reformed, more civilized and mature, audiophile wanting a clean and clear system. Of course having four fifteens that used to flex my roof 2" and shake all the bolts loose in my tailgate was awesome!!!!! But now I have calmed down and mellowed out. However, I still enjoy the ocassional "slamming of the sounds" once in a while. . . .

AUDIO SYSTEM

Only two 12" subwoofers and 800 watts are being used to hit the lower bass notes. The sources come from a Sony XR-430 cassette tape player with TV controls, and a Sony CDX-71 10 disc CD changer. From the source the signal goes through a Sony XE-700 10 band dancing equalizer and an Audiocontrol 2XS crossover. Power comes from two amplifiers, an Orion 225 HCCA amplifier, and Orion 250 HCCA amplifier. The Orion 225 HCCA powers a pair of ViFa 6 1/2" separates and a pair of 8" USD midbass speakers. The Orion 250 HCCA powers a pair of Oz 12" subwoofers.

VIDEO SYSTEM

The video system consists of a Sony SVX-20 video cassette player that utilizes VHS tape media, and a Sony XVM-40 5" monitor mounted inconspicuosly in the dash. The SVX-20, the XVM-40, the XR-430 and CDX-71are all connected to a Sony U-500V diversity TV tuner. The TV tuner is the center of the system, The CD changer, tape, and radio functions are all displayed on the televison monitor. The VCR is also connected to the monitor, along with UHF and VHF antenna televison stations.

SUBS

Two custom built enclosure house a pair of 12" Oz subwoofers. Single reflex ported technology is used to tune the system. The subwoofers are tuned to 100 Hz and range from 25 Hz to 200 Hz. The enclosure is built of MDF fiber board and custom shaped fiberglass. There are separate pockets built into the boxes to hold the CD Changer and the Video Cassette player. The box is covered with gray vinyl that is color matched to the interior of the truck.

SEPARATES

Kick panels were custom built to hold a 6 1/2"ViFa midrange speaker and a 1"ViFa tweeter. Imaging and staging was a major concern, thus kick panels were chosen over door mounted speakers. By building kick panels, the speakers are placed almost equidistance to the listener, creating better imaging and staging. These speaker pods were also covered in gray vinyl and grill cloth to match the interior. The separates also utilize a 12 db passive crossover to separate the midrange and the high frequencies.

AMPS

The two Orion amplifiers a 225 HCCA and a 250 HCCA are mounted under the rear seats. A custom amp rack was built to show the amplifiers using gray vinyl and plexiglass and green neon lights. The back seats flip up very easily to reveal the amp rack, and neon lights. Mounting the amps under the seat posed problens since there would be no flow of air. Thus fans were installed at either ends of the seat in a push pull design to ensure proper airflow and cooling. Cutting through the sheetmetal of the car to install two 3" computer fans were somewhat difficult.

MONITOR & HEAD UNIT

The monitor is mounted between the air condition controls and ashtray, where the stock diagnostic computer would be on the higher model Grand Cherokee. Fitting the monitor in that space posed many problems. After many hours of planning and actual cutting of the dash board, the monitor is installed snugly, hidden under clear plexiglass to simulate the diagnostic computer. Stealth and integration was a main concern in installing the monitor.

The ash tray and cigarette lighter was taken out to make room for the head unit. Squeezing a head unit, an equalizer, and a 5" monitor into the dash is very difficult. There was no room behind the ashtray, thus just the face of the head unit is mounted in the dash. 16 wires were connected using CAT 5 cable linking the face with the base unit itself, hidden in the console.
