THE SOUTHERN RACER

BILL HEMBY

Page 2

We will continue on with our pictorial on Bill Hemby. Bill has now made it to the 1960's and the "skeeters". Bill raced with guys like Wayne McGuire, Herman Wise, Buck Simmons and Tootle Estes on the tracks of Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. And, be sure to check out the "Flintstone" page on JIMMIES for some more interesting history on Bill.

One of his first "mods". This photo is from the Peachbowl in Georgia.

Here's Bill in his first real supermod. An interesting story here is...he came up with the number on this car from the cam he was running in the engine which was a Isky "505".

Another shot of the #505.

This is the same car just a different number and photo was taken at Chattanooga, Tn. This was in the middle 1960's.

Here's yet another version of the #111.

Here's another "skeeter" of Bill's.

The supers or skeeters were about to die out in the south, so Bill jumped on to the late model division "bandwagon". Here are some photos of Bill's late model adventures.

Here's a great looking '55 Chevy with Bill posing.

Here's some on track action.

Bill in a good looking Chevelle at Dixie Speedway in Ga.

Up close with Bill.

This is Bill posing with his Camaro at Daytona USA. Bill raced in the NASCAR Grand American division that was so popular back in the late 1960's. It featured the shorter wheelbase cars like the Camaro and Mustangs.

This is Les Hemby the son of Bill Hemby in his car at a southern speedway.

Many thanks go out to Les Hemby for letting us share these photos and the memories of his dad and his racing career. And, Les you are right, he must have been some kind of a guy as he raised four kids and still had a successful racing career. Our hat is off to Bill Hemby.
