The 1993
Detroit Auto Show concept car from Porsche is finally a reality. The Boxster
was released the 1997 model year in the US officially on January 4, 1997.
Porsche previewed its Boxster
roadster in late September of 1996 in the United States as part of a special
program that took place in Arizona. The official unveiling took place on
January 4, 1997. The new Porsche is very similar to the original show car
presented in 1993, with some minor changes due mainly to safety regulations.
With a curb weight of 2755
lbs and a length of 169.8 inches, it is a bit larger because of the increase
in size of safety bumpers and door protection beams. The 201 hp flat-6
(water-cooled) engine can accelerate the Boxster from 0-62 mph in 6.9 seconds,
to reach a top speed of around 149 mph.
