but
I, markus_smith wish to run in the campaign for the position of mayor of Fortune City.
Here's why..
My first impression.
My first impression of Fortune City was not good.
I arrived from a click through on a banner ad on a citizens site, on the
offer of free web space. Great, I thought. 6 Megs - twice what I get from
my ISP. (After a few hassles getting a permit.)
Later, after reading a bit of the info on the site,
looking back through old net mags and reading the message boards I realized
that I had got a lot more than 6 megs. I had stumbled upon a whole community.
A community who is prepared to help each other out at (it seems) any hour
- day or
night - in the city that never sleeps. A community which gives a great
deal of help to the small people when they need it. One with a strong feeling
of belonging.
That was 10 days ago.
I felt the need to put something back into Fortune
City. That was why I started up the Fortunian Times.

**
"Why should he be Mayor?" - I hear you ask. "He's only been here 10 days."
Good question. And the answer is even better.
I have discovered a seedier part of the city, where
violence and corruption are common place. I welcome the arrival of the
city jail, but say that more needs to be done. We need to beat the bad
things back. My plan for doing this is through education of the citizens
of Fortune City. I propose that regular tutorials (on HTML, graphics, CGI)
be run in a known and publicised place in the city. It shall be open to
all. Those citizens who have done nothing with their sites or have sites
which do not meet the regulations shall be informed of the tutorials. No
change after a minimum period ( to be determined) will be met with action
- eviction or jail, or brandished an uncool citizen for a time.
My first step is in the opening of Marks' News -
a corruption free site with a paper you can trust - although I make no
such claims about the Fortune Teller. To show that I am fair, trustworthy
and honest and wish the best for the city I offer the services of
Marks' News to all candidates running in the election - to display their
manifesto's - so that the election is a fair one and the best person for
the job and the city is chosen. All candidates who are interested should
mail me at
[email protected]
as should anybody who is interested in helping my campaign.
NOTE - The Fortunian Times will also remain as unbiased as possible but still has to cover the stories that emerge from the campaigns.
Other initiatives to come are Mark's Bus Tours -
coming soon. A guide to the very best sites in Fortune City. On a bus.
This should give citizens a target to aim for in building their sites,
give ideas and promote a growth in the quality of the sites around
the city. Making it a much nicer place to live.
I also plan to encourage more spending in the police department - to
catch the people who couldn't care less. Don't worry - if you are
reading this. It shows you do give a damn about what happens here.
Your home will more than likely be safe.
I want education about the city to be available for all for free.
I would like to develop the pirate radio station. I have been unable to tune in so far - getting error messages. I plan to correct this.
I want to clear up the corruption in the city.
I want to look into starting up a weekly lottery with the sponsors for prizes/cash/fortunecity cheques
I want to promote the good sites -
ones which show technical achievement
ones which show talent
ones which show progress and development
ones which show effort
On a cautionary note - think about this - any bribes
are to make up for
something else, and probably paid for by taxpayers. Say no to corruption
and make the city a better place.
Yours
markus
