Ascona

vehicle identification

This page provides information to get to know where and when an Ascona (C) has been built.

To get this info, take a look at the id plate in the engine compartment. It is located right on top the front traverse. (see picture).
The plate contains several data about manufacturer, type, weights and the color code. (Vauxhall plates look a little different) Furthermore theres a VIC (vehicle identification code). This code is internationally standardized from 1982 on and will be found in Opel cars also under the carpet on the right side of the passengers seat.
These 17 (on the pic only 16) numbers hold (in coded way) some intersting information about the vehicle. They now will be explained referring the example shown in the second picture.

The first three letters define the manufacturer.
here: WOL , international code for Opel
They are followed by filling numbers, four times zero.
Then the type of the car is coded by two numbers, using this scheme:

Ascona C

81: sedan 2-door

84: hatchback 5-door

86: sedan 4-door

87: sedan 4-door, luxury

88: sedan 2-door, luxury

89: hatchback 5-door, luxury

the next letter contains the year of production:

C=1982

D=1983

E=1984

F=1985

G=1986

H=1987

J=1988

the next letter or number gives you the location of the production plant:

1=Ruesselsheim

5=antwerp II

6=antwerp I

V=Luton (Vauxhall Motors)

the last numbers are the production numbers of the actual year of production.

So the car in the example picture is a 4-door sedan with luxury equipment, which has been built as number 611 in antwerp I in the year 1985.
