Chevrolet Monza

This j-body version has been sold during the 80�s in south america under the Chevrolet label as Chevrolet Monza. It has nothing to do with the Opel Monza (Senator Coupe).
This version shows some interesting features which will be presented here.

Versions built between 1982 and 1990:

sedan : L ; SL ; SL/E ; CLASSIC ; CLASSIC/SE

hatchback : SL ; SL/E ; SR

as you may see on the photos, there also has been a three door hatch, which never had been offered in europe.

Development of the Monza :

-1982

MONZA SL ; SL/E (sedan 2/4 doors & hatchback 3 doors) with 1.6 OHC engine

-1983

MONZA SL ; SL/E (sedan 2/4 doors with 1.8 OHC engine ) MONZA SL ; SL/E hatchback with 1.6 OHC engine

-1984

MONZA SL ; SL/E (sedan 2/4 & hatchback 3 doors with OHC 1.8 engine)

-1985

MONZA SL ; SL/E (sedan 2/4 and hatchback 3 doors with interior color black, brown and grey.
Start of the MONZA SR hatchback 3 doors (only in black and red with 1.8 OHC engine)

-1986

MONZA SL & SL,SL/E hatchback with 1.8 OHC engine ; MONZA SL/E sedan 2/4 doors with 2.0 OHC engine.
(all types now with new seats and cockpit with rpm meter);
SR hatchback 3 doors with 1.8 OHC engine and RECARO seats (in grey, white and purple)
new design of the interior and the front on all types.
Classic version with all options and 1.8 litre engine.

-1987

MONZA SR hatchback 3 doors with 2.0 engine and some modifications in the braking system
Start of the MONZA L version and an alcohol powered version of the SL sedan with simplified interior and cockpit in combination with 1.8 litre engine.
End of production of the hatchback SL and SL/E.

-1988

End of production of MONZA L and the MONZA SR hatchback. All versions with modified front and back.
2.0 l engine also for SL version.

-1989

Start of the MONZA Classic SE with 2.0 OHC engine, leather seats, electronic carburettor and all options.

-1990

Presentation of the first passenger car of brazil with electronic injection: the MONZA Classic 500 EF - a special edition with leather seats, 2.0 i engine and all options.



The following types never have been sold in europe and are an Ascona version which should meet higher and modern requirements. It has been built from 1991 to 1996 and has strong modifications in front and back, but still based upon the Ascona chassis.

complete modification of all models.

-1992

Classic SE offered with LCD Cockpit and 2.0 i engine.
Presentation of the MONZA Barcelona Special Edition to comemmorate the olympic games in Barcelona 1992 in grey and red.

-1993

no modifications

-1994

GM creates the MONZA 650 Special edition to comemorate the sucess of the plant in brazil ( 650.000 MONZA sold ) and the HI-TECH version with the Digi Dash, MPFI, and all optionals in 2drs version.

-1995

End of production of the CLASSIC SE SL SL/E models.

-1996

new nominations of the old models :
MONZA SL now MONZA GL 2.0 MPFI and
MONZA SL/E now MONZA GLS 2.0 MPFI

End of production of all MONZA models in Brazil.
