OFFICIAL FORD BULLETIN

Friday, January 21, 2000 at 08:13:44
Carlos Sainz and Luis Moya delivered their best performance yet with their new team by setting third fastest time as the action in today’s second leg got off to a delayed start following the cancellation of the first test this morning. The Spanish pair, in the new Ford Focus World Rally Car, were 4.5sec faster than rally leader Tommi Mäkinen over the 27.70km test, a well-known route which features the climbs of the Col de Perty and the Col St Jean.

“We had no real troubles apart from a little bit of brake fade,” explained the 37-year-old Spaniard. “I had to be a little careful for two or three kilometres because the brakes weren’t doing too much to help us slow down but then they started to work properly again and were OK for the rest of the stage.”

Colin McRae and Nicky Grist posted eighth fastest time in the second Focus and slipped a place on the leaderboard to fifth after suffering gearbox problems. “I had difficulty selecting gears at the start of the stage,” said McRae. “As we went through the test it wouldn’t select properly and often jumped out of gear. But for that I think we could have climbed to third.” The team changed the gearbox at the service park in Tallard and McRae left with his Focus restored to full health.

Quotes from Tallard (Service Park after SS 7):

Friday, January 21, 2000 at 06:48:24
Quotes from Tallard (Service Park after SS 7):

Tommi Makinen: "That stage was rough with a lot of gravel, and I think most of the later cars will have had a much cleaner surface. We need to change some of the suspension settings because most of the testing we did was for smooth conditions, but otherwise everything is fine. It is a strange situation now; yesterday we were flat out, fighting with Richard and Gilles, but now it is not so good because much of the pressure is off".

Freddy Loix: "That was a much better stage for me. The notes were much better and now I have the confidence in them I know the places we can go quicker. It is important to get more good times".

Monte-Carlo : Peugeot Official release

Friday, January 21, 2000 at 05:46:53
At the start of todays second leg of the 68th Rally Monte Carlo, Gilles Panizzi and François Delecour's Peugeot 206 WRC did not start this morning at the parc fermé in Gap. The third car, driven by Marcus Gronholm started but stoped one minute later.

During the latest testing in Sweden, the cars started well at a temperature of - 14°C. All necessary precautions were taken last night as a safe guard against the very cold weather (new lights, etc...) and to be able to start during the worst situations.

Currently Peugeot Sport do not know the cause of the problem, but during the course of the day Peugeot Sport will give a full technical explanation.
