BMW M5

This is the brand new 2000 BMW M5.

Overview

New for 2000: The M5 is the flagship of BMW's M cars, and is touted by the automaker as the Ultimate Driving Machine. Based on the 5-Series platform, the M5 is the most powerful M car ever built and the first to offer a V8 engine. All purchasers are entitled to a 2-day M5 Driver Training Program at the BMW Performance Center in Spartanburg, SC.

History: Beginning with the founding of BMW, M has always stood for Motoren—German for engines. Today, M stands for more than just engines—it symbolizes BMW's specialized motorsports group responsible for the development of ultra-high-performance automobiles. The first ultra-high-performance BMW was the M1, which was built in limited numbers in 1978—450, to be exact. In 1988 the BMW M group built its first M5, which was powered by a 256-horsepower in-line 6-cylinder engine. Three years later, in 1991, the M group brought the M5 concept to a new level by introducing a 310-horsepower version, again powered by a 6-cylinder. The last time an M5 was available was in 1995.

Trim Details: The 2000 M5 is available in a single trim. Ensuring that the driver and all passengers remain safe, the M5 is equipped with dual airbags, front side airbags, Head Protection System, automatic seat belt tensioners, xenon headlights, an anti-lock brake system (ABS), All Season Traction, Dynamic Stability Control, Dynamic Brake Control, and a limited-slip differential. Power comes from a potent 5.0-liter 400-horsepower V8 mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Standard features include automatic climate control, a GPS navigation system, leather upholstery, power seats, a tachometer with variable rpm redline, remote keyless entry with alarm, AM/FM/stereo with cassette and CD changer, a moonroof, and 10-spoke 18-inch cast alloy wheels.
