In the year 3224 on the beautiful planet of Mobius, the Great War was winding down to a close. After several strategic victories by the Western forces, both East and West began talks for a peace treaty. The good King Maximilian Acorn, current monarch and serving ruler of the House of Acorn, had ordered Minister of War Julian Ivo to demobilize and dismantle the robot armies that had allowed them such success. It appeared that there would be an end to the fighting at last.

However, on the final eve of the Great War, Minister of War Julian used his position to take control of the robot armies and use them to proceed with his takeover of the capital of the West, the great city of Mobotropolis. Renaming himself Robotnik, he betrayed the king and usurped the throne, casting the king into an alternate dimension known as the Void. Robotnik had studied the Void alongside the magician Naugus but betrayed the sorcerer and sent him into the Void as well after finding out some of its secrets.

As he and his destructive robotic armies, now producing pollution and constructing new buildings with devious purposes, swept over the land, he began capturing Mobians and changing them into robots. The device that allowed this process, the roboticizer, had been developed by Sir Charles Hedgehog as a way to help people live longer, but it did not work as planned and instead took away the wills of those that it roboticized. Robotnik used this device to create Worker 'bots out of normal Mobians, and they were put to work in the smog-producing factories that now created more robots of destruction.

But Robotnik, despite his best efforts, was not able to roboticize or kill everyone. In fact, the trusted royal nanny Rosie, who watched over the King's daughter, Sir Charles' nephew, and their friends (all of whom were five years old at the time), escaped with the children through a series of tunnels that led to what had been originally a royal hideaway in the Great Forest, but would soon become the center of the rebellion against Robotnik. That hideaway--Knothole! And the rebellion--the Freedom Fighters!

In the year 3235, it is now eleven years after Robotnik's coup. He has changed the great city Mobotropolis into a factory complex called Robotropolis. He has also taken over a good percentage of the planet and it seems only a matter of time before his efforts are rewarded with complete rule.

But the Freedom Fighters, led by Princess Sally Alicia Acorn, have not been idle. Many guerilla battles have already been fought against Robotnik and several of his most devastating plans have been stopped, mostly due to Sir Charles' nephew and hero of the Freedom Fighters, Sonic Hedgehog.

However, Robotnik was also not idle. He began the Doomsday Project which was to be the mark of his ultimate takeover. Creating what were called Doomsday Pods, death-dealing heavily-armored robotic weapons that were to wipe out the planet of all life save himself, Robotnik had begun to sit back and enjoy the show.

The Freedom Fighters desperately needed an answer that could stop Robotnik once and for all. They found it in the form of the Deep Power Stones, two mystical artifacts that, when put together by both Sally and Sonic created enough power for them to destroy the Doomsday Project.

And so the Freedom Fighters are victorious, and yet they have not yet fully won. Snively, Robotnik's nephew, had been the only unroboticized person that the rotund dictator had allowed to stay in Robotropolis as a personal advisor, and Snively had prepared for Robotnik's death. He had a hidden base all his own, and had his own surprise in store for Sonic and the Freedom Fighters.

Robotnik's body was never found, supposedly disintegrated in the destruction of the Doomsday Project, but it is not known whether he didn't manage to pull one last escape trick or not.

And so, the final victory has not yet been won, and the wondrous planet of Mobius is still threatened by the presence of many Doomsday Pods, deactivated though they may be for the moment, and by the presence of Snively and his evil plans.

Many things remain unanswered, and the true battle has yet to come. Let us hope that Mobius is saved from those evils that shall come after Robotnik.
