The CD:UK Interviewcd:uk interview with Stephen

It's been a little while since we chatted to the lovely Stephen Gately, so we caught up with him backstage at cd:uk for a gossip ?

worldpop: What's the best thing about cd:uk for you?
Stephen: Ant and Dec are great and Cat's lovely. I always have a good time when I come down here. There's always a brilliant atmosphere.

worldpop: What have you been up to since you last spoke to worldpop?
Stephen: Well, I've been to Asia for three weeks and I've just had two weeks off work which I spent in Amsterdam watching loads of DVDs. Have I been to any good parties? No, I've never really been one for parties, I prefer dinner parties where you can chat to people. It gives me the chance to catch up with all the lads and see my family.

worldpop: What DVDs have you been watching?
Stephen: I bought some brilliant ones in Asia. I bought the complete set of Will 'O The Wisp - every episode ever made. And I also got the complete set of The Flumps and Bagpuss. I got loads of films like Three Kings and The Beach as well. I love my DVD player!

worldpop: You new single I Believe is on the soundtrack for the film Billy Elliot. Tell us all about the flick.
Stephen: It's a really lovely film. It's a great story and it's both happy and sad. Jamie Bell who has the lead role is brilliant and Julie Walters is in it, which is great because I'm a huge fan of hers. The film's about a young boy who wants to be a dancer.

worldpop: You grew up dancing. Can you relate to the main character?
Stephen: Definitely, because his parents want him to do something else and it was the same with me because my parents always thought that school was more important. All I wanted to do was dance but they thought it was important for me to get my education as well. I think one of the reasons I was asked to do the soundtrack is because I can relate to him so well.

worldpop: When's the film out?
Stephen: On 22 September and I'll be going along to the premiere with Eloy. It's the best feeling to have the single on the soundtrack, it really is.

worldpop: Is it true that you've got a part in the Harry Potter movie?
Stephen: Well, fingers crossed it will come off. I love Harry Potter and I have all the books. They start shooing in a couple of weeks and I'd really like to play a magician. It would be fantastic.

worldpop: Are you a fan of Big Brother?
Stephen: I am but I haven't had much of a chance to watch it here. It originated in Holland, in Amsterdam, so I used to watch it over there a lot. Eloy would have to translate because it was all in Dutch, so he'd have to tell me everything everyone was saying. It's weird watching it over here now and hearing everyone talk in English. I knew it was going to be huge because it's such a brilliant concept.
