Here we are backstage at Live and Kicking. . .

Yeah.

. . . With Stephen Gately.

Hello.

Hello

How are you?

I'm very well.

I'm very well too. . . Yeah good. Nice to be here.

Good good. Now, was I Believe actually written for Billy Elliot or was it chosen for the film?

Er no, we wrote it specially for the movie. I seen the movie first and we went in and wrote a song and it coincides with the movie. . . The film is about achieving your goals and following your dreams and the song is as well.

Now, in the video we see Billy Elliot doing his pirouettes. . .

Yeah.

. . . In his room. Can you do a pirouette?

(enthusiastically) Yeah!

Can you? Can you show us?

Yeah.

(Stephen proceeds to "attempt" to do a pirouette and everyone laughs)

Shall we call that a pirouette? (laughs)

So you didn't have plans to be a dancer?

Yeah, well, I loved to dance- dancing was what I used to teach as well. I like it.

Now, I know that you're a big Harry Potter fan.

Yep.

Who's your favourite character?

Erm, I'm not telling you. I'm not even talking about Harry Potter because they wouldn't give me a cameo role in it, so I'm very upset, very annoyed. I'm telling everyone not to go and see it because it's going to be bleep! No, I'm sure it's going to be very good, it's gonna be fantastic. But. . . Harry's cool.

Yeah?

Yeah, Harry's cool.

Have you read all the books?

No, not all the books. 1 and 2.

1 and 2.

I've got 3 and 4 left, but I have them all at home.

Excellent. Now, in I Believe you say that love is the best of everything. What do you think is the best thing about being in love?

Erm, just being in love is a fantastic thing. Love is what makes the world go round anyway so it's. . . It's the companionship, the friendship. Just the simple things, the cooking together, the cleaning together, the walking the dogs, going out on the boat and having a best friend, someone you can trust in and be in love with. It's nice.

Now, is your brother going to play you in the Boyzone film?

Er, yeah if the Boyzone film happens. We're waiting for the right script. We've had a couple of scripts that weren't, er, didn't capture our humour, laughs and jokes we wanted to capture so...

Erm, yeah, he will. He's 18 and I was 18, well just coming up to 18 when I joined the group. He'd be perfect.

What do you miss most about home now that you've moved to Amsterdam?

(slightly p***ed off) I HAVEN'T moved to Amsterdam! I kind of split my time between Amsterdam and Ireland. My family's in Ireland and I'll always have a base. I haven't got a base at the moment, but I'm just waiting to get a nice apartment there. And I do spend a lot of time in Amsterdam and it's a lovely place and Ireland's a fantastic lovely place too. I couldn't leave home.

What's the best thing about Ireland?

(thinking) Er, the best thing about Ireland is. . . Scenery. It's a beautiful country, very beautiful country.

Who's the most famous person you have programmed into your mobile phone?

Oh, I've got some of the All Saints, Mel C, erm, who else? Erm. . .

(someone shouts ME in the background)

I've got the vice president of Disney.

Ooooooh. . .

Erm, who else have I got on my mobile phone? Nicholas Cage.

(surprised) Ooh!

Yep, that's a good one.

Very impressive.

Yeah, he's a very good friend.

Now, you've often said that you'd like to be in a West End show.

Yeah.

Anything going to come of that?

Erm, I've just been in meetings actually with, erm, a very nice guy named Dom Black. Very famous guy. He's a fantastic writer and he's done so much, erm, and there's talks about me doing a musical- who knows? Maybe I will, maybe I won't. I think it's, we've got to work around schedules because my schedules going to be very busy so hopefully we can do that. You never know, we might, we might not.
