Pick Of Popworld Interview

Stephen Gately, 7/5/01. . .

How ya doing everybody? Hello, I'm Stephen Gately and I just wanna say that my new single Stay is out on April 30th so go and buy it.

What have you been up to?

Erm, I've been just taking some time to try and get myself in order before the promotion of this single. I've been doing a lot of running, a lot of walking and cycling to keep myself very healthy and, erm, just getting my life back in order and getting my energy back.

Why did you re-record Stay?

Erm, I changed the single version from the album because, well, we recorded the album about 1 and a half to 2 years ago and we thought, okay, let's bring it up to date with what's happening and I kind of wanted more of that Britney/Backstreet Boys feel to it. And that's why we went in and re-done the vocal and basically re-done the song.

Are you excited?

Yesssssss! I'm really excited- can't you tell?!?!? Very excited I am, very excited about this release because last year I had kidney stones on I Believe and so it kind of slowed me down a bit, but now I'm like 'YAY!', energised. Duracell they call me!

Any plans to do a tour this year?

Erm, I really want to get out and do a tour. It really depends on how everything goes with the single and how the album does again and so I would love to go out and tour at the end of the year. I've been getting a lot of letters from fans, asking when I'm gonna go out on tour so, hopefully at the end of the year, yeah.

My favourite thing is. . .

My favourite thing's walking the dogs in the park and, erm, going out on my bike and, erm, going out for a Japanese. I've got loads of favourite things so we'd be here all day. Erm, I just like things that make me feel good.

Best night of my life was. . .

Erm, best night of my life? Winning the MTV Awards was good. It's the one award people really want to get their hands on and I've got 2, wa-hey! But that was the best night of my life. There's been plenty of other nights, like being on stage in front of thousands of fans.

Favourite song right now is. . .

(sings) "I'm a survivor, I'm going to make it. . ." That's my favourite song, Destiny's Child. I think it's really cool. I like the video and it's about time that poor little girl in the middle, in the background got to sing. That's my favourite song at the minute.

Favourite TV programme is. . .

My favourite TV programme I've been watching; I've been trying to tune in to Eastenders at the moment- you know why. So that's kind of been very very exciting for me and, erm, what else have I been watching? Erm, Friends, Sex and the City, Ally McBeal. . . And Survivor, the American version. (sings) "I'm a survivor, I'm going to make it. . ." Sorry.

If I was Prime Minister I'd. . .

I'd make a lot of changes, erm, I dunno. It's really diffiult at the moment, I think, being Prime Minister, erm, it's a very difficult time but, erm, I'd change a lot of things to do with the poverty situation. Erm, children who are abused and stuff like that. Things to do with children, definitely.

What would you save if your house was on fire?

My mattress. I can't sleep without my mattress.

Any embarrassing moments?

I get embarrassed quite easily actually and, erm, I'll tell you a story. There's one time when I got really embarrassed. I was on the plane and there was this little boy beside me and he came up to me and said "can I have an autograph?" I said "yeah, who is it for?" And he said, "Katie". And so I said "ah, is that your girlfriend?" And he said "no, I'm Katie." It was a girl and I kind of went straight down in my chair with her parents right behind me in the back. So, that was really embarrassing.

Will you sing a bit of your song?

(sings) "I wanna show you, every single dream I got inside of my mind. . ."
