LEVEL OF NECESSITY

Damphousse:
"The greatest liability to a marine is doubt."

Damphousse to the 58th and to the captain (of that other squadron that was blown into tiny little pieces):
"We're not going in there - something's wrong."

Burke to Damphousse:
"What if time were a circle and you were in the middle, and could look at any point which you focused."

Burke to Damphousse:
"Don't think, just act."

Burke and McQueen:
Burke: "Did you file this report, Colonel?"
McQueen: "I recognize the typos."

Damphousse and Vansen:
Damphousse (fearful): "Shane, this it. I know someone's going to die. I'm trying to save us."
Vansen (practical): "Even if we are trained to die, we have got to believe that we're going to live. Help with that."

NEVER NO MORE

Lt. Brandt:
"Okay, lose the scuttlebutt."

A losing gambler and Hawkes:
Losing Gambler: "I thought in vitros were supposed to be bad gamblers."
Hawkes: "Talk to McQueen...huh, Colonel McQueen."

Vansen:
"The more something in life seems inevitable the harder I fight it."

Vansen and Oakes:
Vansen: "... Friend of yours?"
Oakes: "More than a friend."
Vansen: "And here to Lt. Brandt. ..... You look older. You don't look like a boy anymore..."
Oakes: "I'm not. He disappeared about a hundred of these ago."
Vansen: "And your 'more than just a friend'?"
Oakes: "She's the only one I ever felt this way about... Since you."

McQueen and Vansen:
McQueen: "For telling you this, I could be court-martialed. There is something out there.
An alien ace or a new weapon. Suspect everything. Assume nothing. If engaged, get the hell out.
Consider anything you see compartmentalized and then report back only to me."
Vansen: "Colonel! Am I doing the right thing?"
McQueen: "This is an important mission. You're an outstanding pilot."
Vansen: "Am I doing the right thing?"
McQueen: "Even if you're doing it just for him? There has to be something beyond this war."

Vansen:
"Negative, negative, enemy is superior, get the hell out of dodge!"

Ross:
"Abandon all hope my ass!"

Ross:
"Your objective is to search for and remove this enemy spacecraft from my sky."

Ross:
"Find this bastard! And you, pile on!"

McQueen to his superior officers:
"The pilots need to know. Sirs, respectfully: You're sending them into the dark without a light."

Oakes and Vansen:
Oakes: "So that's a no?"
Vansen: "No, that's a 'Let's see where the moon is in five years.'"

Vansen to Oakes:
"The only certainty is now. And I sure don't believe in forever."

Vansen to Oakes:
"John, I'm so sorry that she's not here, but I'm not sorry I am."

Wang and Hawkes:
Wang: "He's on our six!"
Hawkes: "Now, we're on his six! Bring smoke!"

Vansen and Wang:
Wang: "Where are you going?"
Vansen: "To fight the inevitable."

THE ANGRIEST ANGEL

McQueen:
"I don't give a damn for destiny. Anyone worth a chig's ass will take responsibility for asking themselves,
then answering: 'Who am I and what's the point?'"

McQueen:
"He's out there tonight, sending our women, our men to that cold, dark place.
And nothing... nothing will stop him, until I face... the moment."

Hawkes:
"Drop the ball, chig lover!"

Winslow and Vansen about McQueen:
Winslow: "I kind of have a thing for the colonel. But, you know that... navel thing in the back of his neck?
I don't know, I think I'd be disorientated."
Vansen: "Winslow, McQueen is our commanding officer! It's against regulations for him to be with you!
Besides, I don't think that he's ever had anything in his life but the Corps."

McQueen to the 58th:
"Hear this loud and clear, Marine: I am not your guy. I'm not your Joe,
I'm not your damn drinking buddy... and I sure as hell am not a mark in a singles bar."

Elroy EL:
"Olly, olly, oxen free!"

Elroy EL to the 58th:
"Oooh, did I do something... bad?"

Elroy EL to McQueen and Wang:
"I have the uneasy feeling that you gentlemen are unfamiliar with the Ho Chi Minh City Convention of 2054."

Elroy EL:
"They're experienced at watching you. They've done that for a long, long time."

Elroy EL:
" You're gonna get your asses kicked."

Ross and McQueen:
Ross: "This mission means EVERYTHING."
McQueen: That's why I should be the one to fly it, sir."

Ross:
"Action this day, okahe?"

Ross and McQueen:
Ross: "What makes you think you can win?"
McQueen: "I have no choice."

Ross and McQueen:
Ross: "I'll be a son of a bitch if I go to your funeral, Ty."
McQueen: "Yes, you will, sir. But we'll talk about your mother when I get back."

The chaplain and McQueen:
Chaplain: "Colonel! Colonel McQueen! Perhaps you should make peace with your maker."
McQueen: "My maker was some geek in a lab coat with an eye drop and a petri dish."

McQueen and the chaplain:
McQueen: "With all due respect, chaplain: I don't think our maker wants to hear from me right now,
because he knows I'm gonna go out in that sky, in this plane, and remove one of his creations from his universe.
And when I return, I'm gonna drink a bottle of scotch, as if it were Chiggy von Richthofen's blood,
and celebrate his death."
Chaplain: "Amen."

McQueen:
"I know for certainty who I am. But I'll be dammed if I'll ever know the point."

TOY SOLDIERS

Hawkes:
"New meat."

Nathan West to his brother Neil:
"You think you're bad, Private? You think you're mean?"

McQueen to 2nd Lt. Herricks:
"We're not looking for heroes."

Ross to Herricks:
"Don't be in such a hurry to die."

McQueen to Herricks:
"The unloaded gun is the one that shoots the loudest."

The West brothers:
Nathan: "Where is John Wayne now when we really need him?"
Neil: "John Wayne? I never went in the can, you know. I'm no expert in military history."
Nathan: "Forget it."

Neil to Nathan:
"It's not about losing a way of life, it's about losing life."

Nathan to Neil:
"Mom could take on a whole Chig division and send 'em packing."
