FLAG DANCING
THIS ART FORM EVOLVED FROM FAN
DANCINGTHAT WAS POPULAR IN THE GAY
CIRCUIT OF THE 1970'S. "FLAGGERS" TWIRL 2 FLAGS ABOVE/AROUND THEIR BODY
CREATING A FLOWER LIKE VISUAL MOVING TO
THE SOUNDS OF THE LATEST CIRCUIT SOUNDS.
THE FLAGS COMMONLY APPROX. 3X4FT ARE
MADE BY THE INDIVIDUAL(TRUE fLAGGERS
ARE TAUGHT BY AND USUALLY GIVEN THERE
FIRST SET OF FLAGS BY THERE ADOPTED
FLAGFATHER/MOTHER OR AT THE VERY
LEAST HELPED TO MAKE THERE OWN) OF
VARIOUS LIGHT WEIGHT MATERIALS THAT
GLOW UNDER THE BLACK LIGHTS FOR INDOOR
CIRCUIT PARTIES AND FOR OUTDOOR PARTIES
THEY USE REFLECTIVE OR BRIGHTLY COLORED MATERIALS.
hAVING A STAGE FULL OF FLAG DANCERS
IS WHAT TAKES A PARTY TO ANOTHER WHOLE
LEVEL FOR THE MASSES THAT HAVE A VISUAL
OF MULTI-COLORED FLOWERS
SPINNING/TWIRLING TO THE BEAT. THE
FLAGGERS HAVE ALSO BECOME A SUB-COMMUNITY INSIDE THE CIRCUIT COMMUNITY
AND HAVE STARTED TO BAND TOGETHER FOR
LARGE PRODUCTION NUMBERS AS WELL AS
"FAMILY GET-TOGETHERS" OR CHARITY EVENTS..
hOW TO MAKE FLAGS
THE BASICS
To get the weights, go to a fabric store and ask for curtain weights (LEAD WEIGHTED CORD). You
can technically use any fabric for flags, but I would suggest using
lightweight mATERIALS like polyester, silkS OR cHIFFONS Unless you're setting
out to make huge flags, you only need 2 yards of fabric. I would say that a
standard size for flags is 42" x 32", but different sizes, shapes, weighting
and fabric are all up to you. You see alot of creativity out there and the
weight of the fabric and weights can change the way it flutters and the speed
that you can flag at. (Some people prefer to flag fast, others slow. Find
your own niche).
As for weighting the flags, I use 2 rows of weights.
Maybe on a super light fabric they'll use 1.
Take a corner. On the
shorter side I start the weights on the half way mark, then work my way up to
the corner and then down about 2/3 of the length of the longer side.
Make
sure you leave about an inch from the edge of the fabric so you can roll the
fabric over the weights. The next row is shorter and goes on the inside of
the first row.
start the second row half way DOWN FROM where YOU started THE FIRST
and
the corner, ENDING it half way down the long side of the fabric. Roll the
edges over and theN under the weights and sTICH/SEW (NOT SKETCH) Depending on the fabric, you
may have to do something with the edges to prevent fraying. There's fray
check, which is cool, but if they get wet you'll probably have to do it
again, or you could sew it.
IMPORTANt!!
FLAG ETTIQUETTE
So now you have flags, there's some etiquette that goes along with them.
First, if you borrow flags from someone, return them the way you find them,
some people tie the ends, some people don't, depending on the fabric and all
and don't give them to a friend without asking the owner of the flags first.
Second, the stage is only so big and flagging takes up some space. If
there's more flaggers on stage than there is room, try to limit it to one
song at a time so other people get a chance too. They like it as much if not
more than you do. Third, respect the people around you. I don't know if
you've ever been tagged in the face by a flag or not, but I can assure you it
hurts. Plus, if the corner should hit someone's eye, there is the potential
for losing sight. You're hurling lead cord around in a crowd of people, be
aware and be careful. Please follow these rules and pass them along to other
people who might not be aware of them (In a diplomatic manner). With the
increasing popularity of it, there are alot of people who just pick them up
and learn it themselves but don't learn the etiquette that goes along with
it.
In closing,
I just want to add that I don't consider myself any kind
of
authority on flagging, I'm merely a boy who loves to do it. If you have more
questions, feel free to go up to a flagger and ask them, just not while
they're flagging, it can be a form of meditation for many. If you truly have
an interest, most flaggers will be more than happy to answer them.
Any other flaggers want to add anything?
