Java is a programming language developed by Sun MicroSystems and is often seen on the web as Applets. But Java is more than just a web language, you also create stand alone applications just like any other programming language.
I learned Java in my Freshman year of college at Johns Hopkins University. We were offered either Java or C/C++ courses. Since I just started doing HTML/Javascript in my HS senior year, I thought Java would be similiar to JS, and so I chose it.
However, it is not as easy as I thought it would be, and there was times when I totally hated programing. But it turns out to be one of my best classes in JHU. Although some of the programs we did were not as interesting and darn right plain, alot of them are very helpful in understanding the basics. The intro class dealt with mostly the applet side of Java, and the intermediate class involves mostly applications. Some later programs in intermediate Java are interesting and cool, like the Java Web Browser we had to make for a project.
I have bought some more books on networking for Java and game designing. Hopefully my computer will be back in the near future so I can start working on those. I have not done Java in a while and I'm starting to forget things...
