So you want to be an Elf...
Back to News
Joining the elves is a serious choice.  It means that you are willing to take part in a stand against the powergaming stigma that has crippled any real roleplaying environment in Ultima Online.  It means that you are willing to develop a character, not in terms of stats and equipment, but in terms of personality.  We ask that all players that wish to join the elves create a new, completely separate character for that purpose.  Before you continue, please read the Rules of Engagement that all RP races on Catskills have agreed to follow.  Still interested? Read on!

First, it is important to have a character concept. What is it about you that makes you elven? What sort of background do you hail from? What are your goals? What are your fears? We are dedicated to staying in character as much as elvenly possible in game, and providing real roleplay for the Catskills community at large. We are not a group out to fight PKs or 'save the forest'. There are many others you can join if you hunger for red blood. We are only interested in those that wish to bring UO roleplaying to a higher level.  To help with your choices in character concept, please read the of the subraces that comprise the Velt.

When creating your character, appearance is important.  All elves have naturally pale skin, and sparse facial hair, if any. Most elves find it fashionable to keep their hair long.  High Elves and Sylvan Elves have hair that ranges from golden to light brown.  Grey elves often have silver or grey hair.  Clothing is also important.  Elves are fond of greens and browns in their clothing, though the Grey elves often wear grey or black, and the High Elves are often seen with a smattering of royal blue.  As elves are somewhat frail, they tend toward lighter, natural armors, such as leather and studded leather, which they can create from the game they hunt when needed.  Elves often wear chain and ringmail as well, (excluding ringmail tunics, as they have a decidedly "orcish" appearance about them...)  more often in times of war.  Elves DO NOT wear Bone Armor, or orcish helms, as they bear a tangible taint of evil about them.  Plate Mail is only worn by the Elven Knights, and becoming one is no small task...  These restrictions are not guidelines.  They are rules we follow to create a better sense of fairness in our dealings with other RP races on the Catskills shard.

In addition to appearance, elves share many skills in common, and we ask that you refer to the following guidelines.

All elves should start with the Hiding skill at 50.  Elves have an almost magical ability to fade away into the forests, and it serves to keep us safe from humans who have little regard for our efforts.  Other skills are at the discretion of the player, but what follow are a couple of suggestions for starting skills.

Elven Archer
Hiding: 50
Bowyer/Fletcher: 40
Lumberjack: 10

Elven Swordsman
Hiding: 50
Tactics: 40
Swordsmanship: 10

Elven Wizard
Hiding: 50
Magery: 40
Inscription: 10

The Velt will be able to provide you with equipment with which to start your life as an elf, and perhaps some money with which to train additional skills. Making money for your own usage is somewhat of a priority, of course. Your training is, by and large, your own responsibility, but your fellow elves are always available to aid you.
To this end, you WILL need Mirabilis ICQ. It is a free program that is widely used by many UO players to contact each other and to hold meetings. If you do not have it, you can download it here. It, in addtion to the UOTC, and this page, are the principal elven methods of communication.

Once you have created your Elf, start it in Yew, as that is the city closest to our forest home. At this time, the contact for new elves is Elder Fynn Silverleaf.  He can be reached via ICQ: 4694943.
After your elf has been established, we will officially welcome you into our Republic.  You shall be added to our roster and guildstone after your roster information has been submitted to the Elder.  See the Roster section for more information.
