Sorrel Silhouettes
Precision Equestrian Drill Team
In 1996 several women got together for a night of fun on horseback. The riding abilities, ranged from women who had been riding for most of their lives to individuals who had never been on horseback before. The ladies eventually decided that it might be fun to put together a musical ride to perform for their families. Included in this group were four members of a drill team originally known as the Sorrel Silhouettes which had been formed in 1991 and later disbanded. The ladies decided to keep the name of their predecessors, Thus the new Sorrel Silhouettes were formed.
Based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the group consists of the wives and daughters of the members of the Al Azhar Mounted Patrol. The Sorrel Silhouettes are proud to be associated with these gentlemen and would like to extend our gratitude for the use of their horses and facilities. In particular we would like to thank those who have taken the time to offer their support and guidance.
The new Sorrel Silhouettes have had the privilege of riding for family reunions, at private functions where a donation is made to the Shriners Children's Hospitals and at the Al Azhar Mounted Patrol annual Captain's Party.
The main goals of the Sorrel Silhouettes are to improve their horsemanship, to improve and keep their drill interesting, but most especially to have fun and strengthen friendships.
The Sorrel Silhouettes perform on matching sorrel Quarter horses, Arabs or crosses of these breeds. The musical ride is usually performed using eight riders and two flags. The flags provide indispensable stationary focal points for several moves as well as being incorporated into the ride. The moves are executed at both the trot and canter. The ride was designed by members of the Sorrel Silhouettes and music was chosen to suit the speed and attitude of the ride.
The members of the Sorrel Silhouettes participate in many fun events together. For the past three years a few of the ladies have joined members of the Al Azhar Mounted Patrol on their annual trail ride. At Equidance 2000 members of the Sorrel Silhouettes were the "Pylon Girls," who set up the school for the Al Azhar Mounted Patrol. The Sorrel Silhouettes have started a tradition of hosting a Halloween party. In 1999 the members celebrated Halloween with a scavenger hunt and having their horses bob for apples. For the year 2000 the ladies celebrated with a poker ride and several other fun events on horseback. The most exciting thing about the Halloween celebrations are the costumes and trying to figure out who each person will come dressed as! Several of the members also rang in the new millennium on horseback with the members of the Al Azhar Mounted Patrol.
