On June 22, 1998 news is leaked describing a governmental conspiracy
to prepare the United States for the new World Order. In protest, many
of the States refuse to pay their taxes until the government officials,
including the President, step down from office; they refuse. In response,
Arizona, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas seperate from government
control. The next day North and South Dakota, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska and
Wyoming succeed.

In order to prevent other States from doing likewise, the President
sends in Federal troops to restore his jurisdiction; most of the States
east of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers silently topple over night. On
June 24, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Minnesota, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and
Wisconsin side with the other successionists.

On June 25, Federal troops from Forts Mead, Knox, Cambell and Leonard
Wood smash into Indiana and Ohio. By midday they are upon the borders
of Michigan. In Michigan the National Guard rebells and refuses to move.
The governor calls for volunteers and immediately the 30,000 strong
Michigan Militia force, With cries of "I told you so" rise to the defence
of the State. They are joined by other volunteers and together they
fight off the first waves of Federal troops.

Meanwhile, back in Washington State, the President activates the
Federals at Fort Lewis. Two forces are dispatched, one to Seattle and
Portland.  The governors of Oregon and Washington activate their Guard;
six hours later Seattle and Portland are under siege.

In California, Governor Wilson decides to get a jump on the President.
Word has it that the Federals at Forts Irwin and Twentynine Palms are
about to move. In haste, the 40th Infantry Division (Mechanized) is
sent to prepare defences to face the threat. Near Barstow elements of
the 578th Engineer, 185th Armor, 160th Infantry, 442nd Antitank, 426th
Civil Affair and other various units, together with Air Guard support,
wait in expectation as units from Irwin form up to attack.
