Narcissists derive sexual gratification from their own bodies or intellect. The term is a derivative from the mythological Greek character named Narcissus who was known for his beauty. Echo, a nymph, fell in love with Narcissus but because he was so consumed in admiring his own reflection he was unaware of her need for him to speak. She was only able to use the echo of his voice to express her love for him. When she died of grief, Nemesis, the goddess of equity and retribution, avenged her death by making Narcissus unable to leave the river. He finally drowned by falling into the water while trying to kiss himself. At the point of death the goddess turned him into a flower of the same name.
