*#06# for checking the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity)

*#0000# for checking the phones software (SW) - called firmware revision information.
*#6110# Try this code if the above code doesn't work.
On SW-Version 5.24 (only this version) you can check if the Sim-Clock can be Stopped
with this code. (Sim-clock-stop is a kind of standby mode which will save battery time)

*#746025625# [*#sim0clock#] to check if the Sim-Clock can be Stopped
(Sim-clock-stop is a kind of standby mode which will save battery time)

*#92702689# [*#war0anty#] Warranty code.
You don't need the warranty-codes any more - you can
just scroll through the information like in any other menu. It has the the
same data as 81xx and 31xx phones (with "Edit" button for purchase date, and "User data transfer").

Menu:
1: Displays Serial Number.
2: Displays the Month and Year of Manufacture (0997)
3: Displays (if there) the date where the phone was purchased (MMYY)
you can here set the Purchasing Date (Warning: You can only do this once -
so be careful what you write...)
4: Displays the date of the last repairment - if found (0000)
6: Transfers ALL phone numbers, pictures, sounds from one phone to another
(e.g.. if broken) 6110 can also transfer all data via IRport (Confirm Transfer?)

In this sw, it actually improve the reception quality and make some changes
to the SMS ringing. There are some minor changes to the profile menus:
'Long & Loud' SMS alert is now called 'Ascending'.
'Warning Tones' is now 'Warning and Games Tones'. It also seems that the
SMS volume is linked to the ringing volume. i.e. if the I set ringing level 1
the SMS alert is quiet and so on.

An improvement: The 'No Service' areas between cells seem to have disappeared.
When the phone does go 'No Service', it will very quickly log onto a new cell,
usually within a few seconds. A great improvement from the last. (1 - 2 minutes)
Because of this I hope to see an improvement in battery life as the phone is not going on to full power to try and find a cell to log on to.
Ever the less: The buzzing in the earpiece is still present.
The desktop charger now works correctly when the phone is inserted with the
battery connected.
A bug: when editing a sms the cursor is one character more to the right on
the display! In other places, e.g. the phonebook, everything
is normal! though A problem with Nokia Data Suite 1.2 (NDS). The infra red function has now
gone intermittent. I have confirmed this by using a V3.14 phone which
works perfectly with my installed version of the NDS. Basically if I connect the phone
using the RS232 cable the NDS works fine. If I then disconnect and re-connect
using IR, also no problem. If I then disconnect and re-connect a 2nd time using Ir I get no connection. The Ir symbol on the phone flashes, then goes static, then flashes again. Nokia are looking into this for me.

This is what the Nokia 6110 displays when software code is typed.

V 04.51
26-03-98
NSE-3

First line:
The Software Version (My guess is that this software has been used in
previously Nokia-phones, what do you say?!).

Second line:
The date of the SW release.

Third line:
NHE-8 has something to do with the type of phone you are dealing with.
Is it GSM 900 (standard), GSM 1800 (DCS1800) or GSM 1900 (PCS1900)?
Nokia 2110, 3110, 8110(i) are all NHE types.
The only thing that vary is the code after NHE- ("8").
NHE = GSM 900, NHK =GSM 1800 - The number in the end = the model (2110i = 4 etc.)
The 5110 and 6110 is called NSE-1 and NSE-3...this may be because it supports EFR (?)

Software update, how?
I have been asked a lot about how to update the software in your cell phones.
The easiest thing to do is to go to the nearest Nokia
dealer and make him do it for you. Just remember that it is supposed to
be free (a receipt is requiet) so don't let him tell you anything else!

Service Provider Lock

The Service provider (SP) lock is used to lock the cell phone to the
SP's SIM card. Once the cell phone is locked to a specific operator, if one
inserts a SIM card from a different operator the phone will refuse to accept it!
The cell phone will however accept another SIM card from the same operator.

All Nokia phones (2110 and newer) have four different SIM locks which can be used
to lock the phone for upto 4 different providers. But most phones with restriction only
have one lock activated. ( lock 1)

The main code used in Nokia phones is:

#pw+(master code)+Y#

This code is able to check, activate or remove Sim card restriction (SP-lock).

Use the * key to get the p, + and w chars.

'Y' has to be 1,2,3 or 4 - depending of what lock you what to deal with.

#pw+1234567890+1# for Provider-Lock status
#pw+1234567890+2# for Network-Lock status
#pw+1234567890+3# for Provider(???)-Lock status
#pw+1234567890+4# for SimCard-Lock status

(master code) is a 10 digit code, based on the phones IMEI number.
(I can NOT give you the master code - SO DON'T ASK ME FOR IT !!!!!!!)

Eg. To remove restriction on lock 1 type following code:

#pw+(master code)+1#

If you just want to check your phone use 10 random numbers Eg. 1234567890
as the (master code)

eg. To check if phone if restricted on lock 1 type the following code:

#pw+1234567890+1#

EFR

Enhanced Full Rate Codec (EFR):
On: Enter *3370# and EFR will be activated after a reboot of the phone ( consumes more power )
Off: Enter #3370# and EFR will be switched off after a reboot of the phone.

Half Rate Codec:
On: Enter *4720# and Half Rate coded will be activated after a reboot of the phone ( better standby time )
Off: Enter #4720# and Half Rate coded will be de-activated after a reboot of the phone
Enhanced Full Rate will give you much better sound quality when you enable it. The new Enhanced Full Rate CODEC adopted by GSM uses the ASELP (AlgebraicCode Excitation Linear Prediction) compression technology. This technology allows for much great voice quality in the same number of bits as the older Full Rate CODEC. The older technology was called LPC-RPE (Linear Prediction Coding with Regular Pulse Excitation). Both operate at 13 kilobits.(but you take up more space on the network, so they can charge you more) - Talk-time is reduced with about 5%

Half Rate will give you bad soundquality, which gives the serviceprovider the opportunity to have more calls on the network, and you might get a lower charge from them. - Will give you 30% longer talk-time.

Smart Messaging

Smartmassaging with Nokia 6110.
With the tone 36 you can get another ringing tone via Smartmassaging ( 8110i )
First you must have a 8110i, next order a new ringington with your SIM-Card
in the 8110i, select one and order via SMS, if your SMS was send succesfull
you must turn off your 8110i. Take your SIM from the 8110i into the 6110 and
switch it on. After a few seconds you receive a SMS (The new ringing tone).
Read the SMS and you can hear your new tone in the menu as tone 36.
Another way of doing it (the easy way when it comes to all...)
As far as I know, this perticular procedure only works with the 6110.
Also note that some network operators does not allow you to make
international calls without first paying a deposit, and this system is
in Finland.

Before changing the SMS Centre number, you also might want to write
the old number down.

In "short" here's what you do. Looks complicated, but once you've got
the message template, you're rockin'.

1) Change the SMS Centre Number from whatever you've got now to
+358405202999
2) Send an SMS message with word "tones" to the number 99999

Have a very small cup of coffee while waiting for TWO messages to be
received by your phone (There'll be more if you've got delivery
reports ON). These messages are two parts of a list of melodies, and
the first message is used as a template to request a melody. Keying it
in manually takes forever, and never worked for me. You could look
through both of them and write down all the melody names and then
erase the second message.

3) Trim the first message down. When you receive it, it'll look
something like this:

tones
><Vconf:
beeps.conf
><Vnumber:
+441234567890
Select ringtone
>.filename
.>figaro1
>*flute
>*hungaria
>*hungary2
>*jbells
>*larry
>*liberty
>*mozart3

The message ca be trimmed down to:

tones
><Vconf:
beeps.conf
><Vnumber:
+441234567890
Select ringtone
>.filename
.>figaro1

..and saved it. ("+441234567890" above is just an example number. On
your phone it'll be your number)

4) Now that you have this saved template, all you have to do is open
the message, edit it and replace the "figaro1" melody name with
whichever melody you want to download.

5) An example message to send for requesting the Monthy Python' Flying
Circus Theme which is the "libery" melody would be:

tones
><Vconf:
beeps.conf
><Vnumber:
+441234567890
Select ringtone
>.filename
.>liberty

6) After you've sent this message and gone back to the main screen,
you should be notified that the phone has received a ring tone, and
you can listen to it, save it or discard it.

7) If you saved it, it'll appear as ring tone number 36 in the list
(the one that's called Personal if you've never downloaded melodies
before). The 6110 can only store one downloaded tune at a time.

If you want to request another one, just bring up the saved message
and again replace "figaro1" with the name of the melody you want.

Note that in lists it's common for melody names to have a "*" in front
of them - do not include this in the name!

Tips and Info UPDATED / NEW

Power Button Tip:
If you press the button for a short moment, the menu with the profiles is shown on the display.
If you press one more time, the mobile turns itself off. You can use the up and down cursor keys
to scroll and enable a different alert setting.

The 54# Tip:
Type 1#, 2#........54# on the keypad (when you're not in the menu) to get the phone number used for with this key when speed dialing.
Toggle Headset and Auto settings
#1: Try Connect the pin-out 1-2 (in front from the right.) to toggle headset settings

#2:Try Connect the pin-out 2-3 (in front from the right.) to toggle auto settings
(The phone will think that you ar using it in the car - "auto" is displayed in the LCD)

What's a Business Card?...
A business card is a special SMS message which is composed as following:
//SCKE2 BEGIN:VCARD N:name TEL:number END:VCARD

Call Menu
(In a call) you can press and hold down the menu button for 3 sec. and a menu appears. (trasfer, mute etc.)

Quick SMS Typing
When typing SMS messages, you have to wait some seconds before you can type the
next letter if it is in the same button than the previous one. For example
try to write the word "letter", you have to wait before you can enter the second "t"..
A much faster solution is to press the # button twice and then the letter "t".

The Reboot Trick
Should work on all software versions..let us know if your phone can take it..

1. Go to calendar ( menu - 8 )
2. Make note / reminder
3. Enter some text into the edit box
4. Hold clear until whole text is cleared, then press back
5. Press 0.Main screen is shown but a space appears on the screen. You can't see it ofcause.
6. Enter 4 digits ( 1234 for example )
7. Use the down arrow to move the cursor to the left side of the numbers and the space (2 times down arrow)
8. Now enter 6 digits and press the green "Call button".
9. Wait some seconds..the phone will now flash the background light and finally reboot.

The trick should also work on other menus like the profile menu...

Thanks goes to MikkoOhtamaa for reminding us of the trick.

61XX Serial Cable
Build you own Nokia data suite cable..
First See Schematics

DESCRIPTION

The cable consists of four parts, the RS232 (DB9 Serial) connector, the 3.3volt power supply, the MAX 3232 IC and the phone connector.

The RS232 end supplies 12v via pins 4 and 7, through 2 (DI, D2) Schottky barrier diodes to a low power (500ma) 5 volt regulator, the 5v output goes through 3 diodes (D3, D4, D5), each of these diodes drops the voltage by 0.6v, so that about 3.3v is delivered to the MAX3232.

The MAX3232 is a 3volt version of the popular MAX232 TTL to RS232 convertor IC, that is used by a number of manufacturers for their interface cables. The 2V7 Zenner diodes hold the TX and RX date lines to the phone at a safe maximum limit of 2.7volts. Note that the capacitor on pin 6 of the IC has it's +ve lead to ground.

The hardest part to get hold of might be the phone connector, you might have to utilise a hands free connector..

NOTES

In practice the diodes D1 and D2 can be general purpose 1N4148 diodes, and D3, D4 and D5 can be 1N4001 diodes. The circuit should be built as shown. Be sure to check all solder joints and the orientation of components.

The above information should be more than enough for the electronic hobbyist to construct a working cable. If you find that it does not make much sense to you DO NOT ATTEMPT TO BUILD THE CABLE, it might save the life of your phone! As I say there should be more than enough information, DO NOT ask me for more!
