Day Date Task / Assignment
Monday 17/8/98
  • Read information on Fundamentals of Visual Basic 5.0 (especially on variables and string manipulation techniques) in the textbooks entitled VB Tips.
  • Read information on the Internet on Visual Basic manipulation and tips on Strings, Files and Directories.
  • Pack and finalised the mini-project (WebValidator) and make the program into an executable(.exe) file. Create a 'Readme' file that explains and provide instructions on how to use the program and provide some pointers in its functions and capability.

  • Review and changes to the project scope and theme. From 'Autonomous Bibliography Building Agent (ABBA)' to 'Toward An Autonomous Bibliography Building Agent'. Changes are due to certain factors like project time constraints, exposure constraints in Visual Basic programming and the constrains in availability of good and reliable VB resources (e.g. unavailability of VB textbooks in libraries and softwares with missing components).
  • During the review, there are three tasks need to be carried out throughout the remaining attachment week, and they are;
    1. WebValidator enhancements - create an error log that can identify the error code of a particular link and state it down sequentially into a list. Once a link not valid, I must append a 'BAD' logo onto the link on the webpage by using Visual Basic for notification purposes.
    2. Considerations contributed to the issues surrounding the building of Project ABBA - issues pertaining to text and data-mining.
    3. Web-watch for new Robocup papers (e.g. proceedings, on-line books and journals, etc..) - below are the steps to be taken for this task;
      • upon locating the new Robocup paper, cut out the reference and download its postscript (file),
      • rename the file in the format given by Tralvex into the local directory,
      • zip it up using WinZip,
      • append it into a /new.zip directory,
      • update the Robocup bibliography webpage with the new Robocup papers, and add a 'NEW' logo to the new citation.
Tuesday 18/8/98
  • Planning the procedure of doing some minor reformatting of the web documentation to reflect the new project theme and scope. Perform some changes to the project log (e.g. to the titles and format).
  • Perform a 2 hour search for new RoboCup papers on the Internet.
  • Search for information on RoboCup 98 competitors for 2 hours, take note of their email address, the team leader, the country they represent, which type of league (e.g. small, medium or simulation) they belongs to and the website where the information. Create a table to housed the all information and fill in the required information in it.
Wednesday 19/8/98
  • Perform a 2 hours search for new RoboCup papers on the Internet. Bookmark some sites containing newly released conference papers on RoboCup and its constituents (e.g. artificial intelligence and autonomous agents). Take note of all the citations of the papers and check it with the existing citation in the local 'c:/robobib' directory.
  • Spent 4 hours searching for information on RoboCup 98 competitors, specifically the competitors from organisations in the U.S.A. Add the new information to the table list.
  • Planning of WebValidator 2.0 (second version). This new program have added feature and less bugs. The added feature is the availability of listing down error codes of non-valid URLs and the keystroke commands (e.g. pressing 'ctrl F' will enable the program to fetched the URLs, etc.).
Thursday 20/8/98
  • Spent 6 hours searching for information on RoboCup 98 competitors, mainly concentrate searching on the competitors from institutions from Japan, Germany and some from Sweden. Send e-mails to one of the members in the competition to acquire information about their team. Add the new information to the table list.
  • Bookmark some RoboCup papers for validation. Validate the papers and delete some of them as some are already included in the local RoboCup Bibliography file, and some are not in English (Japanese and German).
  • Read Visual Basic textbook entitled 'Visual Basic 5.0 Programming' borrowed from Bedok Community Library. Concentrate on the chapter focusing on the string manipulation technique.
Friday 21/8/98
  • Practice making some sample applications using VB5 after reading the Visual Basic textbook entitled 'Visual Basic 5.0 Programming' borrowed from Bedok Community Library. Applications created are mainly based on manipulating strings. Arranging and rearranging (e.g. date) the order of the strings and placing numbers to each line of strings.
  • Search for information on RoboCup 98 competitors for 4 hours, focused the search on the competitors from the organizations in Japan and U.S.A. Fill up the empty spaces to the table list. Send e-mails to some of the competitors to acquire information about their team members and their team themselves.
  • Validate some of the new RoboCup papers by referring to the local RoboCup bibliography. Delete the ones that are already available in the bibliography and zip the new ones.
  • Create a webpage to housed the information on the competitors of RoboCup 98 in Paris, add it into the web documentation..

checker.gif (920 bytes) Weekly Summary of Task / Assignment

          The seventh week of my attachment in KRDL is full of research work, especially in searching for email addresses and websites of some competitors that participated in RoboCup 98 in Paris. Besides searching for that information, I also search for new RoboCup papers (e.g. conference proceedings, on-line magazines and journals, etc.).

          There is also an announcement to the review and changes of the project scope and theme. From ‘Autonomous Bibliography Building Agent (ABBA)’ to ‘Toward An Autonomous Bibliography Building Agent’. These changes come about due to certain factors like lack of project time, lack of exposure in Visual Basic programming in us and the constrains in availability of good and reliable VB resources (e.g. unavailability of the required VB textbooks in libraries, and softwares with missing components). The new project scope leads me to carry out more research work, like finding information rather than doing programming work like, creating a program. This new project scope really reflects the things that I have learnt in Temasek Polytechnic and I can make good use of my skills to perform the desired tasks.
