Definition

Sleep disorders are those which affect the cycle, duration and quality of sleep. They may be primary or secondary (e.g., caused by drugs or alcohol). There are approximately 70 different disorders of sleep, the most important are discussed here.


Impact on Life

Sleep disorders have physiologic and socioeconomic consequences. Sleep apnea for example may cause a person to have high blood pressure or cardiac problems. Sleep apnea patients may be sleepy during the day and depressed; these may cause poor performance at work and trouble with relatioships.
