Billed as the first 16-bit system, it was released in 1989 by Sega of America. Obviously created for the older audience, it released a lot of controversial games that angered Congressmen (and started a ratings system) like Night Trap (for the Sega Genesis addon, the Sega CD,) and Mortal Kombat (no explaination needed.) Far more advanced than the Nintendo Entertainment System, it captured a legion of devotees who would have happily tattooed a Nintendo logo on their body. The Sega Genesis went into the hands of the masses with Sonic the Hedeghog, which was Sega's answer to Nintendo's Mario.
Nintendo, not willing to roll over and die, released the Super Nintendo, it's own 16-bit system that was more advanced than the Genesis. Despite this, the Genesis enjoyed plenty of 3rd-party support for it's weaker 16-bit system. Many people thought that the Genesis was better for fast-action games, such as Sonic & Knuckles, Contra:Hard Corps, and Gunstar Heroes. It also released a solid lineup of sports games like NBA Live 98, and Madden 97.
In my opinion, this is the BEST Genesis emulator around! It has a high compatibility rate, and excellent sound! The sound pales in comparison to KGen, but it still is good enough. New in .32: Made by BloodLust Software.
Version 0.32b:
-Fixed relative path problem on command line
-Autoversion setting
-Fixed FM channel 6 problem
-Improved CPU skipper
-Corrected 68K IRQ levels (stupid typo)
-Fixed a Z80 reset bug
-Fixed some more z80 bugs
-F11/F12 switch resolutions (get SDD!)
Steve Snake's KGen, a close second to Genecyst, has FULL stereo sound emulation! The only drawback is that it is VERY choppy in a Win 95 DOS box, so I would suggest using this under DOS only. What's new:
Version 0.33b : 28th September 1997.
Apologies for the lateness of this version, I have been on Holiday !
Added Horizontal Interrupts. These are always ON by default. There should be
no need to switch them OFF, unless something doesn't run correctly with them
ON, or it slows down too much.
Added the most common Raster Effects. Now you can play Outrun ! Horizontal
Interrupts need to be ON for these to take effect. Many more Raster Effects
are planned, and the ones that are in there have been written in about four
hours this evening, and so can be, and will be, heavily optimised at a later
date.
Again, made an attempt to track down and fix problems reported by some people
relating to KGen crashing their machine. Hopefully this is now sorted.
Fixed further timing problems with the YM2612.
Fixed Counter bug (Streets of Rage).
Most games that stopped working in Version 0.32b should now work again. And
many, many more games will now run.
