'INTOLERABLE CRUELTY'
It has to be said that there aren't many leading men who'll let their first scene in a big budget movie find them all trussed up in the dentist's chair, their pearly whites gleaming and a paper bib tucked into his shirt. Not so George Clooney though as he lets the Coen brothers do their worst to him in this highly entertaining film.
Clooney stars as Miles Massey, a dentally-obsessed divorce lawyer who specialises in winning seemingly unwinnable cases. Sure he's made some enemies in the past but that's never worried Miles. Unfortunately though he's about to get on the wrong side of determined divorcee Marilyn Rexroth (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and that can't be good news for either of them.
Quite simply Joel and Ethan Coen have once again struck gold, especially in Clooney and Zeta-Jones. Having worked with George on O Brother Where Art Thou, the cinematic siblings knew what to expect but the Welsh Oscar-winner must have been a bit of an unknown quantity - and their faith in her has paid off handsomely. She and Clooney bounce off each other effortlessly with remarkable chemistry as the barbs fly back and forth.
There's also a whole host of talented co-stars on show here, from Geoffrey Rush as a wronged hubby to Cedric The Entertainer as a private eye who just loves his catchphrase, but this being a Coen brothers film, there's also the odd quirky character involved, most notably the magnificent Wheezy Joe (Irwin Keyes).
As you'd expect script also provides some real laugh out loud moments while nothing in the film is ever quite what it seems and, ladies, if you need any more of an excuse to see this movie, you even get to see George Clooney strutting his stuff in a kilt.
