catcat's Trek Episode 3 (Disaster Recovery)

As we've seen how Ferengi suffered from power failure in the last episode, what if the Enterprise suffer the simular problem herself?

< Scene >: The Enterprise travelling in slow impulse.
Data: (voice) Second Officer's log, stardate 10003.00. After I have total losted the Enterprise for several times and she still come back becasue of those space-time thing "as usual", the Captain decided to give me a break and leave me alone for a few days. I have decided to use my free time to start a project that I have been wanted to for a long time.

< Scene >: Science lab.
Data:   Computer, activate sub-processor initiation sequences.
Computer:   (voice) Please specify the initiation sequences version.
Data:   Windows StarDate 10000.00.
Computer:   (voice) Initiation sequences activated.
Data:   Computer, run a level 4 diagnostic on object Data-Beta-7.
Computer:   (voice) Diagnostic completed.
Data:   Computer, run a complete diagnostic on object Data-Beta-7.
Computer:   (voice) Diagnostic program unavailable. Unable to comply.
Data:   Computer, explain.
Computer:   (voice) You have performed an illegal operation, please reboot the ship's computer and try again.
Data:   Sxxt! (after a while) Computer, reboot ship's computer.
Computer:   (voice) The ship's computer is extremely low in resources, please close some of the programs and say "OK" to continue.
Data:   Computer, control, alt, delete.
(A 3D projection of a list shows)
Data:   Computer, remove the process "rndmcpy".
Computer:   (voice) Warning, insufficient memory. Unable to comply.
Data:   Damn! UPLOAD YOU!
Riker:   (voice) Commander Data report to the Bridge.
Data:   I am off duty at the moment Sir.
Picard:   (voice) You're not!
Data:   Understood. I am on my way Sir. (then leave the lab)

< Scene >: Main Bridge (Red Alert)
Worf:   Captain, life support is failing.
(Data goes back to his station)
Picard:   Mr. Data. Analysis!
Data:   (pressing a few buttons then stop) I can not access the computer from this console Sir. It seems that the ship's system is low in resources and affecting the computer's normal routine programs. I have to get to Engineering to regain access to the computer.
Picard:   Make it so! Number One, see what you can do there.
Riker:   Aye Sir. Data.
(Riker & Data go into the turbo lift)

< Scene >: Engineering
Geordi:   Commander, we have to stop the ship to maintain minimum power to control the ship.
Riker:   OK. Just make it quick.
Geordi:   Ship's now slowing down .... to .... all stop.
Computer:   (voice) Life support retains 56 percent
(status switch to yellow alert)
Data:   Geordi, I can not access the ship's computer from the Bridge, I must access it from here.
Geordi:   Help yourself Data, over there.
(Data go to a console and start working)
Riker:   Anything?
Data:   It seems that the ship's computer is running a huge amount of new processes and take most of the memory resources.
Riker:   But we still have back up, right?
Data:   You mean the cache file Sir. When too many new processes are running at the same time, the old processes are moved to the swap file.
Geordi:   But those are system processes! They should be running at a high priority level, how can they be moved to the swap file!?
Data:   Apparently, those new processes are running at the same or higher level than the system processes.
Riker:   But how can it happen? Who start those processes?
Data:   I do not know and I am going to find out.
Geordi:   What are you doing Data?
Data:   I am running a "ps -f" command ... There!
Geordi:   Ok, uid ... wslycrhr.
Riker:   (yell) WESLEY!
Wesley:   (voice) Commander Riker?
Riker:   Get your genius axx down here!
Wesley:   (voice) I'm fixing the ship right now!
Riker:   If you don't come down here now, the only thing you're going to fix is your axx!
Wesley:   (voice) I'm on my way Sir.
Geordi:   But how can he start a process with a priority higher than those system processes?
Data:   It is obvious that he did it by randomly pressing buttons again.
(Wesley walk in)
Wesley:   Commander?
Riker:   (pointing at the console's screen) Are these yours?
Wesley:   (read the console for a moment) Yes, they are. What's up?
Data:   Wesley, the processes you have started are using up our ship's resources.
Wesley:   But I've only started one! Not that many of them!
Riker:   Data, remember last time? The Ferengi ship? Is it possible that the Ferengi do this back on us?
Data:   It is possible but not likely Sir. Since Wesley said he started it.
Geordi:   What does the process do Wes?
Wesley:   I'm glad you ask. Actually, it just randomly duplicate itself in a very short time interval.
Riker:   (yelling) WESLEY!
(Avoids being beaten up by Riker, Wesley ran away and Riker chasing after him)
Picard:   (voice) How's it going Mr. Data?
Data:   We have located the person who did it.
Picard:   Let me guess. Wesley randomly pressing buttons again.
Data:   Exactly Sir. I am thinking of a solution to stop the processes.
Picard:   But we have another problem here, report to the Bridge.
(Data & Geordi leave Engineering)

< Scene >: Main Bridge
(Data & Geordi come in, Riker & Wesley are already there)
Data:   Sir?
(Picard tilts his head towards the main viewer)
(A big Romulan warbird showing)
Riker:   After our engine's stopped, the Enterprise drifted into the neutral zone.
Worf:   Captain, they're hailing us.
Picard:   On screen.
Romulan:   Welcome to the neutral zone Enterprise. I'm Commander Morlok, may I assist you in anything?
Picard:   I'm Captain Jean Luc Picard, we are doing a research here, thanks for your gentle offer and we'll let you know if we require your assistant.
Morlok:   May I know what kind of research you are hosting? Determining how fast the Enterprise can go while drifting?
Picard:   Our research is a Federation's matter and doesn't concern you. Now if you don't mind ...
Morlok:   (interrupting Picard) Not so fast Captain Picard. You're in Romulan space! I order you to hand over the Enterprise.
Data:   Sir. During the conversation, the Enterprise does drift over to Romulan space.
Picard:   I need to discuss with my crew members.
Morlok:   You have no choice Picard! But as the Romulan always want to maintain a good friendship with the Federation, you have one hour.
Picard:   Meeting!

< Scene >: Observation lounge
Picard:   Options!
Troi:   Captain, I feel ...
Picard:   Wait! You're not feeling pain or joy again aren't you?
Troi:   No no no no no! Trust me, this time is new!
Picard:   Ok, Counsellor. What is it?
Troi:   I feel they are serious Sir.
Picard:   And ...?
Troi:   That's all.
Picard:   (whispering) Why do I hire this woman? (normal speaking) Thank you for your obvious observations Counsellor.
Picard:   Any other suggestions?
Riker:   Contact Starfleet?
Geordi:   I believe by the time Starfleet sent someone here, the Enterprise is already in Romulan's shipyard.
Picard:   Mr. Worf?
Worf:   They are Romulan. They have no honour! But I'll fight to death!
Data:   Not if we have lost power, and our shields are only operating at 13 percent of full strength.
Geordi:   Yeah. We are lucky enough to maintain life support.
Riker:   Shall we destroy the Enterprise?
Data:   At this moment, we can not even activate the auto-destruction sequences.
Picard:   How about the power problem? Can we regain control?
Worf:   Yes! Then have a fair fight!
Data:   The processes that Wesley has started are rapidly duplicating themselves. It will require a very fast processor to remove those processes one by one.
Wesley:   I wish I started the process on the Romulan ship.
Picard:   Since when do you have right to attend meetings here?
Wesley:   I'm sorry Sir. When you said "Meeting" on the Bridge, I thought you're including me.
Worf:   Yes! We can use those processes as an advantage!
Riker:   Worf?
Worf:   If we can access the Romulan's computer and move the processes onto their ship ...
Geordi:   Excellent thinking Worf! I've never seen you come up any idea in any meetings!
Worf:   Well, it's been 7 years. Over 10 years if DS9 count.
Riker:   But all ships has a security code, how do we know their ship's security access code? We can't just guess the code by ran....
(Everyone looking at Wesley)
Picard:   (smiling) Make it so!
Data:   I might have to remove some processes to free up some resources for the control consoles.
Picard:   Proceed Mr. Data.

< Scene >: Main Bridge
Wesley:   (at a science station) I can by-pass their system here and here ... now I'm trying to sneak through their sub-virtual protection systems ...
Picard:   Wesley, what you're saying doesn't make any sense! And what you're doing here is just guessing their security code by pressing random buttons.
Wesley:   Yes, this is my problems Sir. I can't press buttons without saying pretend-to-be-hi-tech terms.
Picard:   How many time left Mr. Data?
Data:   (thinking) Get a watch! (normal speaking) 12 minutes and 57.2915 seconds Sir.
Riker:   (look at Picard) What will they do to us?
Troi:   Captain! I ... I feel ...
(Picard & Riker turn to Deanna quickly)
Troi:   (scares) Never mind.
Wesley:   Captain! I have successfully guessed the code.
Data:   Pass it to me here Wesley.
(Piccard & Riker go to Data's console)
Data:   I have opened a tunnel to their ship's computer.
Riker:   Then?
Data:   I am also shutting down and reserving the resources on our ship. When the processes can not find any resources on our ship they will look for resources across the tunnel. After I have reserved all our resources, this will force all the processes to move to the Romulan warbird and consume resources over there.
Riker:   Then you'll burn the bridge!
Data:   Burn the bridge Sir?
Riker:   Never mind Data.
Worf:   Captain, Morlok is hailing us!
Picard:   (looks around and smiles) On screen.
Morlok:   Captain Picard. I think time's over.
Picard:   Isn't it? Time is passing fast.
Morlok:   Lower your shields and prepare to beam aboard or I'll blast it open.
Data:   I have reserved all resources on our ship and closing the tunnel Sir.
Geordi:   Ship has regain power Sir!
Worf:   Shields're up to 100 percent. Charging phaser and photon torpedos.
Picard:   (rubbing his hands and smiling) What did you say Morlok?
Morlok:   (light flickering and jabber) Wha ... What's going on?
Worf:   Their shields're failing Sir! Shall we fire?
Riker:   (smiling) Or we can blast their shields open and beam aboard.
Picard:   (smiles) Ensign, set course back to Federation space.
Wesley:   Course set Sir.
Picard:   (share a look and a smile with Riker) Half impulse, engage!

< Scene >: The Enterprise leaves slowly, leaving a lights flicking Romulan warbird
