Raven-Kat -- “Perhaps for this purpose.”
Rae suggests to Kay. "Or perhaps for another, but I don't really see how it matters. One insurmountable obstacle at a time."
"We improvise." Raegun says. "It's what we do."
"We use the chocolates to get past the army and then we can worry about who left them and why later on." Rae says. "It won't be hard. Look, I have a plan."
"Here we go again." Raegun mutters.
"Hey! It's better than trapping us in here and having us dig our way out, so just listen to it." Rae sighs and rubs the back of her neck. IQ #4's chocolate has made her dizzy, although her mind remians clear.
"We'll listen." IQ #4 assures Rae after a long silence.
"Okay. It's this. It's dangerous, but if it works, we can get out of here without firing a shot or striking a blow."
"What a unique concept." Raegun mutters.
"Okay, we know that some of the chocolates seem to have more practical aplications than others. My shrinking, Kara's camoflauge, Jila can walk through walls. These are practical and immediate.
"Others," Rae continues, "are less immediately useful. "Kay can understand foriegn languages, Mouse... well, who knows. Which brings us to the fact that, even with the labels, we don't know what some of them do..."
"Feed your head." IQ #4 mutters.
Rae nods and carries on. "Anyway, using all of these different powers, we are at a definite advantage, despite our small number." She looks at Ghost. "Ghost, is your vision different?"
"No." Ghost shakes her head. "Maybe it didn't work because I'm a ghost."
"Maybe it's not visual at all." Rae suggests. "Close your eyes and cast out. Try and see if your mind is working any differently, if you understand things you couldn't before."
"Um, okay..."
"The plan, Rae?" IQ #4 prompts.
"Right. Divide and conquer. I'm tiny, so I can sneak past un-noticed, which would be great if we could ALL do it. But some of the others can sneak past, too."
"Yeah," IQ #7 protests. "But the rest of us can't."
"I know. That's my plan. I want us to be SEEN trying to escape."
"I don't follow." Mouse says.
"She means that the group who COULD escape should act as a diversion to distract the guards so the rest CAN escape." Ghost says.
"Very good, Ghost." Rae says, smiling. "See what I mean? A small group leads the guards away from the entrance of the cavern, the others get out while the guards are distracted, and then the other team escapes as soon as it can. What do you guys think?"
As the group deliberates, Rae adds, "And could one of you PLEASE find the chocolate to make me grow bigger again?"
JilaCosa -- And so it was decided,
they would split up into two groups. One to escape the caverns and the fuzzy peoples, and the other to cause a distraction to help the first group.
Kara (with her perfect camouflage), Jila and 'Ghost (who can slip through the walls), and IQ the original (still in his werewolf form) would cause a distraction and mess with their captors heads. IQ's #4 along with Chryse, Mouse, and KayDe would follow Echo out of the caverns.
"And what about ME??" Rae says from her place on #4's hand.
The Scoobs turned as one to look at Rae. This was going to be a tough decision. Should she stay with #4 for protection or go with the distraction squad.
"Uh...Rae?" Jila starts. "Don't you think it would be better....?"
"Don't even start with me, Jila." Trying to look her most commanding Rae pulls herself up to her full five inches of recent height. "You're going to need me with you. Which one of you can understand IQ in his present condition? Kay can translate for Echo now, but you will Need someone to translate for IQ. And anyway, what's more distracting than a large voice coming from right under your feet."
Jila sighs, and the others nod.
"I'll carry you Rae." Walking away from the wall of the cavern, Kara holds her hand out for Rae to walk on. "It's going to look a little strange for you to be floating along by yourself so, if you don't mind, you can ride here in my vest pocket."
Grumbling a bit, but walking up Kara's arm and slipping into the pocket anyway, Rae says one last time,
"Has anybody found a frellin' chocolate to make me my normal size again?"
"I hate to be the bearer of bad news," #7 takes out the list of remaining chocolates and scans it again. "but there isn't one. No chocolate for getting taller."
"Dren." Rae frowns and huffs "Well let's get this show on the road."
With that, Echo and IQ go to the doorway of the cave and sniff.
<<Nothing right now>> Echo turns back to the group and qives a couple of quick barks.
"Ok," Kaybe says, "This is it. We'll meet you outside."
The distraction team heads out first back into the caverns, and then after a minute Echo leads the rest of the group down the hall to the outside world.
KaraS -- “Oops, we forgot something.”
Kara ran back to the place they had all been standing and picked up Raegun from where Rae dropped him when she had begun to shrink.
"Wait guys!" she called to the others who were walking back up the tunel. "Take Raegun, you might need him."
Kara handed Raegun to #7 and ran back to catch up with the rest of her group.
"Now let's go do some damage. This is going to be fun."
Raven-Kat -- Rae occupies herself
by pulling lint out of Kara's pocket as the diversionary team moves into position.
"Stop that!" Kara hisses at her.
"Clean the lint-trap in your dryer once in a while!" Rae suggests, sneezing. "Frell this! How do I let you people talk me into this drenn?"
"Quiet!" Ghost hisses as they move into position: just around a bend from the whole army.
*We should be going in there with our frelling guns blazing! What the frell was I thinking: 'non-violent solution' my eema! This'll never work! And why the frell does my head feel all tight?*
~~~
Meanwhile, the group of escapees was moving into position itself. IQ #7, clutching Raegun tightly, was at the head of the group. Echo and IQ #4 provided a rear-guard. The rest of the Scoobs formed a tight huddle in the middle.
"I'm suddenly feeling very happy that Rae forced us all to learn how to run in formation." Mouse whispers.
"Run my eema, this is going to be a sprint." Kay mutters. "We'll be lucky not to trip over each other."
"Guess we'll find out how much Rae's training is worth." Chryse whispers.
"Shh." IQ #4 says softly. "We wait here for the signal."
"What signal?" Mouse asks. "Rae didn't say anything about any signal."
"It's Rae." Raegun contributes. "I believe that general confusion is her idea of a signal."
~~~
"Now!" Rae hisses from Kara's pocket. "Remember, try to look sneaky."
"Right."
The group begins its cautious advance.
Ghost says in a stage-whisper, "I KNEW we shouldn't have trusted them not to leave us here."
"Shhh!" Jila whispers back, sounding irritated.
"Both of you shut up and let's get moving!" Kara whispers loudly.
This is all it takes. Suddenly, several hundred guards come running around the bend.
"Frell! Run!" Kara shouts.
"Scatter!" Rae adds.
Jila and Ghost do this most effectively by running through different walls. To the eyes of the guards, only a wolf remains. Having never seen one before, they hesitate. Kara begins edging around them, careful not to brush against anyone.
Suddenly, "Oh, gods! Frell. FRELL!"
"Rae!" IQ barks.
"Get me out of here!" Rae yells loudly, pounding on Kara's chest and then trying to climb out of the pocket.
"Rae, what are you doing?" Kara whispers.
"Growing!" Rae wails. "Holy DRENN!"
"Aw crap." Kara, now completely behind the guards, hears her pocket begins to rip. Suddenly, she's on the ground with Rae sitting cross-legged on her chest.
The guards begin to back away from this apparition, floating several inches above the ground. Several take one look at her and flee into the recesses of the cave.
Rae looks up at the astonished guards. "Um, hi..." She rises slowly, giving the still camoflauged Kara a chance to do the same. "Guess it didn't work, huh?" In a whisper, "Run, Kara. Meet the others."
Kara doesn't have to be told twice.
"Guess next time I should eat the whole thing, huh?" Rae asks the guards, smiling and backing away.
~~~
General confusion is a very good descrition of what the escaping team percieves. Amid shouts, guards begin hurrying off in one direction, and a few minutes later, Rae is heard to curse loudly, at which point guards run off in ALL directions.
"Now!" Raegun whispers.
Single-file, the Scoobs dart out of the cave. Rae's lessons have obviously paid off, as not one of them trips.
"Now what?" Mouse asks.
"Now we wait for the others." Raegun says placidly. "I belive once all are out, we collapse the mouth of the cave in order to facilitate our escape.
The Scoobs wait in tense silence for a few minutes, when panting heralds the arrival of Kara, who breathlessly explains what happened, adding, "Rae weighs a frelling TON!"
Ghost and Jila soon rejoin the outside group as well. Only Rae and the wolf IQ are still absent...
IQ120 -- IQ started barking....
... The furred creatures hadn't reacted to positively to him before, and they didn't this time either. Most of them ran screaming unintelligable words in high pitched voices. A few stood their ground, not looking to happy that their comrades had deserted them.
JilaCosa -- As the group awaits the return of.....
Rae and IQ#1, echoes of barks and growls pour out of the cave's mouth
"Oh this can't be good." Kay looks worriedly at the group. She'd translate the barks and growls but they're just too faint to for her to understand.
With a few growls, barks, and puffs of air Echo tells her what he hears.
"Oh damn." Kay says listening intently. "They've been caught. What we're hearing is IQ trying to scare off the creatures like he did the first time, but not all of them are scared enough to run."
"And Rae doesn't have Raegun either." Mouse says, patting Raegun's barrel.
"They're going to be in Big trouble," Chryse sighs and shakes her head, "especially with Rae's kidnapping stunt."
"As much as I hate to think about it," #7 says, "we're going to have to go back in."
"Yes." Kara agrees. "All of us this time. No more splitting up until all of us are out of there."
"It looks like the chocolates are still effective........," Jila says as her arm passes through Kayde
"Stop that Jila." Kay says with a shudder "That's just too weird."
".....but I think we'd better hurry. We don't know how much longer the effects are going to last."
"Do me a favor Jila." 'Ghost says from behind Jila. "Unless it's an absolute emergency don't pass through anything else solid. If that chocolate wears off while you're wholly or partially in something solid, it could kill you. Let me check through things now. okay?"
"Fine with me." Jila smiles at her friend. The thought of getting stuck in a rock wall didn't do anything good for her peace of mind.
"Ok guys, let's go." Kara says. "Echo, you first. You can find them faster than we can, although I do expect that we're going to find them in the King's audience chamber. Mouse do you want to bring up the rear with Raegun or would you rather have somebody else do it?"
"I can do it." Mouse says pulling Raegun up to look at his 'face'. "Activate scanning mode, Raegun."
"With pleasure Mouse." Raegun says as his scanner hums to life.
So back into the tunnels they go. And as Kara said they would, they find themselves outside the door of the King's audience chamber.
"7." Kara whispers. "Are there any chocolates in the box that will help us get them out without somebody getting hurt or killed?"
"They're all pretty vague." #7 whispers back, rechecking the list again.
"They can't be any more vague than this one." #4 whispers pulling his chocolate out of his pocket. ‘Remember what the White Rabbit said.’ What the heck does that mean?"
"Rae said it had something to do with that Jefferson Airplane song," Chryse offers. "and the line ‘Feed your head’."
"I've been thinking about that." Jila whispers to the group. "Do you think it could have something to do with gaining knowledge?"
"It's a possibility." #4 says, one eyebrow arching upwards and the left corner of his mouth curling into a smile. "If that's it then I've got the answer to their '3 who are one' prophecy."
Suddenly the voice of the King roars out of the doorway.
"So, your companions have abandoned you to me have they?"
"Hardly." Rae rolls her eyes in disgust. She knows it's not true, but she also knows that they are all outside waiting for her and IQ to come out. They couldn't possibly know that she and IQ weren't going to be coming out any time soon.
"If I may." Raegun says softly out in the hall. "I can let her know that we are out here and that you have a possible plan for freeing her and IQ."
"Do it Raegun." Mouse says, then walks quietly over to where 'Ghost is. "Go transparent. Then walk in there and appear and disappear a few times. Not where the King can see you, just on the outskirts of the room. Make sure you are seen by those creatures."
'Ghost giggles softly. This was going to be fun. She hardly got the chance anymore to mess with people's heads like that. Then she fades out and goes into the chamber.
"Rae says don't be stupid." Raegun reports. "She says get out of here Now. She'll get them out of here shortly."
"Tell her we're already committed." Kara says recamoflauging herself by the wall and hoping she's going to the opposite wall that 'Ghost went through.
"We need to be in there." Chryse whispers to the remaining group.
As Kara and ‘Ghost wander around the room teasing the furry creatures, whispers can be heard “haunted” “haunted”
"GUARDS!" The King shouts angrily. "Take these two to the holding caves. They won't cause us anymore trouble down there." The guards approach warily, poking at Rae and IQ with their spears.
"WAIT!" #7 yells nearly as loud. “We’re are here again.”
“AAARRRrrrr” the King loudly growls in his rage. “Guards! Take them too!”
“Wait.” A voice says from behind the King. It is ‘Ghost and she’s decided to have some fun. “I am the Earth Goddess and you have angered me.” She then floats over to a place by the door.
“You See?” The King looks around worriedly but composes himself quickly. He doesn’t know anything about any Earth Goddess but the Advisors whisper to him that this is a good thing. She must be on their side. He points his hairy finger at the group of humans “You have angered the goddess. She Will punish you!” Meanwhile the Kings advisors, while still whispering in the King’s ear look around frantically to see if they can find out where the voice is coming from.
“No.” ‘Ghost says, suddenly appearing directly before the King. “I am angry with You!”
“What???” The King says nervously. “Wha- What did I do?”
 Good girl, ‘Ghost * The Scoobs huddle and start speaking quickly. Hopefully they can have a plan laid out be the time ‘ghost is done.
“You are Not the rightful King!” ‘Ghost says loudly, and for effect she floats about two feet off the floor. “I can see it in your heart.” (Her chocolate gave her the power to see the truth in things, remember?) “And these two who would advise you.” ‘Ghost floats over and drops down to the floor in front of the advisors. She whirls around to face the small furry creatures. “These two are not even of your Race!” Breaths are inhaled sharply at this and one of the braver beings grabs one of the advisors and pulls his hood off. The Guards who once had their spears pointed at Rae and IQ now rush over to the throne and point their spears at the King’s advisors. The cloaks are pulled off the two revealing that they are definitely not of the race of the furry creatures but more like tall goblins, with Brains!
“Now’s our chance.” #4 pulls out the chocolate he hadn’t bitten into in the other cave. “The only way that this can successfully work is if the three of us take a bite of this one chocolate. If Jila is right, then it will give all three of us the same knowledge and their prophecy comes true, ‘three who are one’.”
“So how does that get us out of here?” Rae asks, just about ready to grab Raegun and start firing.
“With Mouse here,” #7 explains, “we can’t lose. The chocolate Mouse ate gave her the power of Justice for the Righteous. First we haven’t done anything wrong so we can be considered ‘the righteous’, and second, whatever their problem is down here it will help make it right.”
“Let’s hope we have enough time.” Jila says. “I’ve got it!” Jila snaps her fingers and scurries over to where ‘Ghost is hovering. She then kneels, bowing her head, and pleads for an audience with the ‘Goddess’. Trying not to sound to hammy she says “Oh wonderous being. Please may I speak.” Jila motions for the others to get down, and trying not to laugh out loud they also kneel.
“You May Speak” ‘Ghost says, trying to sound Godly. (Don’t ask me how that’s suppose to sound, lol)
“Your prophecy has come true.” Jila points at the Scoobs. “The three who are one are here.”
“Yes, I see.” ‘Ghost turns toward the group. Keeping a straight face is becoming more and more difficult. “Although this one is in wolf form I know he is one of the three.”
“We have come to correct the wrongs that are happening to this community.” #4 speaks out. Behind his back #4 breaks off a piece of the chocolate and hands the rest slyly to #7 who breaks off another piece. He in turn holds the last of the chocolate low so that as the IQ wolf passes behind #7 he can take the chocolate and eat it. #4 and #7 fold their hands in front of them and then bowing over their hands in reverence to the Goddess, eat the hidden pieces of chocolate. Their eyes open wide as all of the knowledge of the community flows into them.
“And how will you do that?” The ‘Ghost Goddess inquires.
“Simply.” Four and Seven say simultaneously, while IQ woofs his agreement. “We shall rule.”
“WHAT??” Human and furred creature voices shout together.
“Four, what are you talking about?” Rae whirls on him in disbelief.
“This can not be!” Lady Honeydew finally speaks out from the side of the room where Kara stands. Suddenly, Lady Honeydew is getting pushed by the almost invisible Kara towards the throne, a look of absolute horror on her face.
“Tell them.” Kara says as her camouflage fades.
“Yes, tell them.” Seven echoes Kara’s words.
“I… I…” Lady Honeydew looks around at peoples of her community. “My… son…. He was to be King when King Til’dar died. Kul’sin was his son.” She sighs thinking of the old king. “I know you elders remember when these two first came among us.” She said pointing to the now prisoners. “They took my son and put him in the holding caverns. He would have been dead a long time ago had I not been able to sneak him food and water.” This time she shudders remembering all of the indignities she put herself through to keep him alive. “But I don’t know exactly where he is.” During this explanation, while the room's attention is on Lady Honeydew, 'Ghost disappears. She's done her part and doesn't want to overdo it.
With that, a guard brought out a rough key and handed it to Four, who gave it to Echo and #1.
“The holding caverns are that way.” The guard said pointing left. Echo and IQ take off at a mad dash for the holding caverns, coming back minutes later with an extremely smelly, filthy furred creature. The humans try not to grab for their noses but the smell is nearly overwhelming.
“I thank you.” Kul’sin says to the Scoobs. “I thought I would die down there. How can I repay you for what you have done for us.”
“Just let us go peacefully.” Seven says
“You have my word.” Kul’sin looks around at his people. “Let it be known throughout the community that these beings are our friends and that they are Never to be harmed.”
“And what will you do with them?” Four asks, pointing to the false king.
“Do not worry.” Kul’sin says looking to the large being on the throne and the two beside it. “It will be just.”
Bowing to the new king, the Scoobs leave the audience room and make their way back to the outside world.
“Why did those two choose that big oaf as leader?” Kay asks as they walk through the tunnels.
“Because he Was an oaf.” Rae says.
“Yes.” Four continues. “They needed someone they could control, and even though he was much larger than the others he had a lot less brain power.”
"So how did you know that what you said was all it was going to take?" Chryse asks
As the IQ's explain about the chocolate, the knowledge and their decision, the Scoobs are soon back at the cave entrance. The sun is shining brightly making them shade their eyes for a short time. The ground is dry again and the traveling looks good.
“IQ, look!” Jila says excitedly. “Here’s another of those maps!”
IQ stands on his hind legs, his fronts paws on the stone wall by the map. “grrr, woof,” huff “grrrr”
“He says,” Kay starts and then stops. “Dang, the chocolate wore off.” She chuckles looking to Rae.
“He says,” Rae chuckles also, shaking her head. “Four get out a that writing pad and copy this. He also says that the moon is out of the full phase and he’ll be changing back soon.”
kayde -- Giddy with relief
that this particular ordeal was over, and they were out in the fresh sun and air again, the Scoobs were in particularly
high spirits as they set off down the road towards their destination. But, was their trip complete? Were they going home? Or, were there other adventures still in store for them before they were released?
Raven-Kat -- There’s ALWAYS another adventure....
As Rae leads the group down the mountains, she reflects on the events that had taken place within. *Victory to the Righteous? Am I righteous now? When the FRELL did that happen?* Smiling, she leads the Scoobs into a wooded pass. "We're almost to the foothills."
"This is fun!" Raegun bubbles cheerfully. "Like Eco-Challenge, but without medivac units standing by!"
"Yeah, that really IMPROVES a trip." Kara laughs.
"Aw, come on, guys!" Rae laughs. "It's not fun if it's not a challenge, and it's not a challenge if you can expect to get your eema saved every time you frell up."
"True PK logic!" Mouse laughs. "Like, oh... the enemy can't get to him if I kidnap him first."
Rae blushes. "It seemed reasonable at the time."
"No it didn't!" IQ #4 laughs. "It NEVER seemed reasonable!"
"Which never stopped Rae doing anything!" IQ #7 laughs.
"Why would I let a minor detail like THAT slow me down?" Rae laughs, looking over her shoulder at the Scoobs. She suddenly falls to the ground.
"Careful!" Mouse says as she and Jila haul Rae to her feet.
"Even you need to watch where you're going in terrain like this." Jila adds.
"I didn't trip." Rae mutters, dusting herself off.
"Right." IQ #4 laughs, walking past her. He promptly hits the ground too.
"Told you so." Rae mutters, helping him to his feet. "There's a force-field."
"What?" Ghost asks uncertaintly. "We're trapped on the mountain?"
"No." Raegun announces. "Rae, if you'll walk a half-metra to the south, you'll find the terminus of the field."
"Huh?" Chryse asks.
"About a kilometer that way, the force-field stops." Rae translates.
"Not very useful, then, is it?" Kay asks.
"You'd think not," Rae mutters, "but I wonder..."
"Wonder away. Just let's get moving." IQ #7 suggests.
"No." Rae shakes her head and picks up a handful of the dusty dirt under her feet. She releases it into the wind, and the Scoobs watch as it hits the invisible wall before sliding to the ground. "Yeah, I thought so."
"And we've learned from this display?" Kara asks, curiously.
"That the force-field is circular in shape." Rae provides.
"Or, more acurately, ovoid." Raegun adds.
"Huh?"
"Not a true circle." Mouse says.
"Right." Rae nods. "It's not meant to contain anything on this side of it..."
"So, something's inside?" Chryse asks.
"Must be. Odd place to have a force-field unless SOMETHING's inside." Rae frowns. "Ghost, would you mind? I'd like to see if the inside looks from the inside like it looks from the outside."
"HUH?" Kara, Mouse, and Chryse ask in unison.
"I think Rae thinks that the trees and stuff we see inside might be, like, a projection."
"Good, Ghost." Rae nods. "If you could just have a peek?"
Ghost nods and squares her shoulders before drifting into the force-field. And stopping dead in her tracks. "Frell..."
"What?" Rae asks.
"Can't get through." Ghost marvels.
"Hmm..." Rae stares at Ghost. "It must be protecting something important."
"Or hiding it." Mouse suggests.
"Or hiding it." Rae nods. "Let's trace the perimeter and see if we can't find a way in. Raegun? How long will that take?"
"Three point four arns."
"That's not long." Rae says brightly.
"It'll be dark before we finish." Chryse points out.
"Should we risk it?" Kay asks.
"Fortune favors the foolish." Rae points out, grinning. Pocketting several handfuls of the dusty dirt, she begins walking the perimiter.
IQ120 -- Some time later...
"Found something," said Raegun just as it was begining to get dark,"there seems to be a hole in the force field. It's just about the size of a door."
Once the scoobs had entered the force field, they found that what they had seen was actually a projection. The force field had been protecting a beautiful orchard filled with large apple trees. At the center of the orchard was a large manor. The scoobs walked towards the old manor. In front of the old house, was an old man. In his right hand was an old cane, in his left was a rake. He was puting leaves into a pile when he heard the scoobs coming.
"Hello friends," said the old man,"would you like to rest in this place, you look quite weary."
The scoobs accepted the invitation. A short while later they were all inside, sitting around the old man's large table eating dinner. One by one the scoobs took turns telling the old man all the things that had happened to them so far. When they reached the part about the haunted tower the old man grimaced, and excused himself from the table.
Just before the old man climbed the stairs Rae asked, "Excuse me, but I don't believe we yet know your name?"
The old man paused as if in heavy thought, "My name," he said, "is Sir Daniel."
Chryse74 -- Everyone looked at #4
Remembering that he had been Sir Daniel in the tower. #4 blushed red and mumbled an apology to the real Sir Daniel.
"Oh, my. We're really sorry." said Jila.
"We didn't mean to bring back old memories, " says Mouse.
"It's alright, you couldn't possibly have known," sighed Sir Daniel. "The ghosts of that terrible time still haunt the tower?" he asked.
"Well, we think we made it alright, but how can there be ghosts if you are still alive?" asked Chryse.
"It's part of magic of the tower. It's difficult to explain, but I owe you that much for dispelling the spirits in that place." replied Sir Daniel.
JilaCosa -- Jila and Kay look at each other....
shaking their heads. Unbelievable. Sir Daniel still lives.
Suddenly a soft breeze blows through the room, and just as suddenly each item that the Scoobs took from the tower flashes. Jila feels a hot spot on her forehead directly under the moonstone of the circlet she's been wearing since the Scoobs left the tower. She reaches up quickly to remove the circlet but stops when she realizes that the spot on her forehead is only warm now. Looking around to see what everyone else was doing Jila sees that some of the group are slumped over in their chairs.
*Oh heavens, not again.* Jila thinks, and those who aren't slumped over start checking out those who are.
"What's happening?" Sir Daniel asks, his knuckles white on the stair bannister.
"I think," Mouse says looking around from her place beside Kara "that this is just what happened to us in the tower before....."
"Daniel." Kay whispers sadly
"Oh Daniel" Rae says, with a tear in her eye.
"My son." Seven says quietly.
"Brother." Kara pushes her chair back. She gets up and walks over to Sir Daniel, who by now is looking almost horrified, and hugs him lightly.
"What.....???" Sir Daniel's voice trembles.
"Shhh," Jila says, walking over to stand beside Sir Daniel "It's okay. This is why we were allowed to find you. They needed to know you were alright."
"Talk to them Sir Daniel." Chryse says. "They'll rest better for it."
"I feared you were dead." The voice of the Lady Kay is so soft. She dabs her eyes with her napkin.
"M-mother?" Sir Daniel asks the voice, choking back a sob. What would his father think of all these emotions running rampant in his heart. "Father?" He looks at the one called Seven who sits so very straight in his chair.
"Please, come back and sit with us." Kara takes Sir Daniel by his arm and gives him a tiny tug.
Taking his chair again, Sir Daniel listens intently as the spirits of his family fill him in on the events that took place after the duel, Lady Laurel's suicide, and Sir Daniel's hasty departure. During this, the Scoobs not affected motion to each other that they should probably leave the room and give Sir Daniel some privacy.
"No, please, stay." Sir Daniel says to the Scoobs who are trying their best to sneak out of the room. "It's hard enough to face them this way, I don't think I could do it alone."
Turning back toward their seats the Scoobs hear the sounds of quiet crying. To their complete surprise it is Rae! But she is not herself at this moment, she is the Lady Raven who has just figured out after all these years that she fell in love with Sir Daniel at first sight and was heartsick for years after he left. Chryse and Mouse, remembering the roles as Lady Raven's sisters, go to her and try to comfort her.
"My Lady." Sir Daniel says walking over to Rae's chair. Mouse moves over to the other side of the chair with Chryse to give Sir Daniel a place beside Rae. "Please, I beg you, forgive me." He says as he kneels beside Rae, bowing his head.
Raven-Kat -- Weeping,
Lady Raven stares at Daniel through Rae's eyes. "This all lies on our heads and our hearts, my love." she whispers to Daniel. "Our thoughtlessness and our rashness... Both of our fathers paid the price for us."
"No..." Daniel protests softly. "We had no way of predicting what was to become of it all."
"We should have known." Lady Raven says softly. "Frell that!" Rae bursts out, reclaiming her body with a start. "Daniel, this was not your fault, not Lady Raven's fault, not even the fathers' fault really."
"It doesn't matter." Daniel sighs. "The suffering was real enough. For all of us."
"Then I say we fix it."
"WHAT?" the Scoobs stare at Rae in awe.
"We go back and we fix it before it happens. Sir Daniel and Lady Raven and all of thier families can live happily ever the frell after."
"But how?" Daniel wonders.
"Magic." Rae suggests. "Or technology. Pick one, and I'll find a way: this much I owe your Lady Raven, and this much she owes you." She looks up at the Scoobs, still crying. "Guys, this is something we need to do. Do you agree?"
Lurkingghost -- “Um, Rea?”
I don't think that will work." 'Ghost says tentitively.
"If we go back in time and change everything, then we won't be able to have the adventure in the tower, and we won't find out about those poor people, (because they won't be sad anymore) and we won't even want to go back in time. And then those stupid time paradoxes come into play and I don't know where we'll be."
"Unless . . ."
"We could combine magic and technology to make sure that the then-we have the adventure in the tower and that the now-we go back in time and make sure that the family is ok."
-'Ghost
Raven-Kat -- “It’s okay, Ghost.”
Rae assures her. "Temporal mechanics was one of my best subjects as a kid. A simple Spatio-Temporal distortion field will ameliorate the paradox effect nicely, I think, and we can meddle with relative impunity."
"I see..." Ghost mutters.
"No, really, it's simple. If we create a Spatio-Temporal distortion, essentially a bubble in the fabric of space-time, we'll be unaffected by subsequent changes to the fabric. It's do-able."
"If incredibly difficult." Raegun notes.
"No one asked you." Rae mutters.
kayde -- Feeling more like herself
but, still very emotional, Kay agreed that if it would help, they should deffinately go back. Looking at Jila and IQ and the others, she shook her head. They were in for either an emotional time, or a dangerous time. But, that never stopped them before. If something could be helped. They had to do it.
JilaCosa -- “Just a couple of questions, Rae”
Jila says coming back to her place at the table. "Isn't this Spatio-Temporal thing what you keep lecturing Four and Seven about? If it is, should We be messing around with it to this kind of extent? Also, Sir Daniel isn't going to be able to come back with us, is he? Two Sir Daniels in the same time..... wouldn't that cause a Major paradox?"
Raven-Kat -- “OF COURSE we should
mess around with it, Jila!" Rae tells her, grinning. "It's not entirely the same thing I've been lecturing the IQ's about at all! The distortion field will minimize the effects of our tampering. The guys never even USE one!"
"Only because you won't tell us how to generate one."
"Yeah, and give you ideas? I think not." Rae returns her attention to Jila. "This is about righting wrongs, Jila, it's not about exploration or experimentation... Do you believe in a higher power?"
"Huh?" Jila nods slowly.
"Well, then do you believe everything happens for a reason?"
"Um..."
"Maybe we were brought to that tower specifically to find out about the curse and to break it. Think about it: Echo said that lots of travelers stayed at the tower all the time, yet WE were the ones affected by the curse. Not, I think, coincidence. Consider it..."
Chryse74 -- “I think we should do it.”
"I think we need to do it." said Chryse. "The spirits know now that things could have gone another way, a happier way. We need to fix it."
Sir Daniel looks up, "Can you? Can you really fix it so we could have lived happy lives? So my father would still be alive?"
"Yes, we can. and if everyone is in agreement, we will." states Rae.
"Please try, life has been hard with this hanging over my head. It was partially my fault that it happened, " says Sir Daniel. "My most fervent wish was to somehow do it over again and correct things, make sure that no one died...."
Raven-Kat -- “Gentlemen...”
Rae says to the IQ's. "I'm going to need your help on this."
"I thought you were the expert." IQ #4 says, grinning at her.
"Let's just say that I'm a little more solid on theoretical maths than I am on engineering."
"Frell." someone mutters from the back of the crowd.
"I know what NEEDS to be done." Rae continues, ignoring this, "But I'll need help with the execution."
"Let's not use words like that in life and death matters like these." Raegu suggests mildly.
"Life and death?" Ghost asks uncertainly.
"It's a figure of speech." Rae assures Ghost. (Rae's fingers are tightly crossed in her pocket as she says this.) "This is perfectly feasable."
"If you say so."
"I do." Rae unshoulders her pack and up-ends it onto the ground. "Wish Spyral were here. He's always got useful drenn in that wing of his. As it is, we're going to have to make do." As Rae speaks, miscellaneous objects continue pouring from her pack and, in fact, continue to do so for several more minutes.
The Scoobs stare in awe.
"What?" Rae asks, shaking a few final things out of her pack. A pulse-pistol and a comm badge clatter onto the top of a pile only slightly smaller than Rae herself. "That's where you guys went!" she exclaims cheerfully, holstering the side-arm. "IQ's, help me out here." Rae orders, wading through the pile.
"Um, what are we looking for?" IQ #7 asks.
"Anything electronic or digital." Rae tells him, holding up a lap-top. "Cell-phones, pulse-rifles, data-packs, phase modulators..."
KaraS -- Kara watched in resignation as...
Rae and the IQs sorted through the amazing pile of electoinic gadgets. Frequently, one of the IQs would become sidetracked by a particurlarly interesting technological doodad but Rae, single minded as always, would quickly bring him back into line. They sorted the equipment into two piles, the stuff they planned to use to construct their time machine and the stuff they didn't.
"Say Rae." Kara said. "Isn't this one of Sixth's gadgets? Part of that transmitter she set up when we went to Mexico?"
Rae looked up from her sorting. "And what if it is?"
"Well..." Kara debated asking if Rae had "liberated" it from Sixth without her knowledge and decided against it.
"So, how's it coming?"
"It would be coming faster if you'd stop asking me stupid questions." Rae said shortly.
Kara sighed. Rae only snapped this way when she was worried. This was not going to be as simple as Rae made out it would be. Kara looked at the others, chatting amongst themselves, oblivious to what was going on. Kara decided not to enlighten them.
"What do you think THIS is?" #7 asked #4.
"Hmmmm." #4 said, examining the part. "Looks like part of a neutronic extractor."
"Are you sure?" #7 said. "I was thinking more along the lines of an harmonic phaze resenator..."
"Put that down and come over here." Rae ordered.
Obediently the IQs put the part down and went over to where Rae began explaining how to put various parts together while she modified others. Kara picked up the part to examine it but, as Rae glanced toward her, she stuck it quickly in her pocket. Then, as Mouse destracted her by asking her a question and involving her in the conversation, Kara forgot it was there...
Raven-Kat -- Rae smiled grimly at Kara
as she set to work dis-assembling the electronic devices in the 'useful' pile. Kara had no way of knowing that Sixth had thrown the signal-booster out after it had burnt three diodes, and Rae didn't bother to enlighten her to the fact that Sebacians were some of the universe's worst pack-rats. 'You never know when it might come in handy' as the saying goes, were words to live by for people like Rae.
She caught herself wishing that Sixth had thrown out some of those truly impressive weapons of hers as well, not only for thier military potential, but also because the amount of information stored in one of those little auto-transform number was close to a tera-byte. She'd always wanted a computer made completely out of weapon components.
"If you do it like that, you'll burn out the cell." Rae informed IQ #7 as he tried to pull apart a comm. She handed him a small tool that looked like a very fine bit of wire. "Just slide that under the catch and pull."
#7 tried and smiled as the comm popped open. "Why make it so difficult?"
"The theory is that we don't want our techs falling into the wrong hands--"
"Aren't you guys the wrong hands?" IQ #4 cut in.
Rae ignored him. "So all of our electronics are built to resist disassembly except by someone who knows the tricks of the trade." Rae reaches into a pocket and pulls out a small role of electronics tools. "If in doubt, ask. Some of this drenn is truly expensive. I don't feel like spending a year's salary on a new gamma transmitter. Understand?"
"Yeah. What's this?"
"Don't ask questions." Rae liberates the small pill-box sized piece of equipment from IQ #4 and carefully opens it. She pulls out a small chip and puts it into the 'useful' parts pile. "Gods, but salvaging all this drenn when we're done is going to take me years..." she sighs. "Hand me the phase inductor, #7. No, the PHASE INDUCTOR..."
IQ120 -- “There is a better way.”
said IQ after looking through the pile of gadgets for some time.
"How?" asked Rae.
"You guys can go back and fix the problem while I'm fixing the time machine."
"How are we going to travel back in time if we haven't put the machine together yet?"
"Simple, I'll come back in time and get you guys once I've put it together and we can go back in time. Let's see... the me from the future should be getting here in 3... 2... 1..."
Suddenly, a large structure that resembled a modified bus apeared with IQ number one at the wheel, and the words "Time Machine" painted on the side.
Raven-Kat -- Rae shakes her head and laughs
"Well, I guess that's one way of handling it... Or have you guys just been watching Bill & Ted again?" Rae shakes her head again and rapidly packs up everything the IQ's won't need. She hands Raegun to IQ #4. "Gunny can walk you through anything you aren't clear on. He'll also make sure you don't frell up any of my equipment."
"I'll take good care of your equipment and of him." IQ #4 promises.
"Thanks. Seven?"
"Yes, Rae?"
"You sure you guys can handle this on your own? My technology, I mean..."
"With Gunny to help us, yeah." IQ #7 nods.
Rae smiles and hands him her tool-kit. "If you frell my stuff up, you'll be sorry."
IQ #7 smiles.
Rae turns to IQ #1. "What do we do with Sir Daniel?"
"I beg your pardon?" Sir Daniel asks. "I obviously must come with you."
"But if we change the future, what do we do with you then?" Rae asks. "I think you'd better stay here."
"But you'll be going at it blind." Daniel protests.
"Better than creating a paradox. We're realtively safe from the effect by virtue of not existing in the time we plan to visit. You DO exist there, and here, so bringing you back would be a mistake."
"What'll happen to him if we do change the future?" Ghost asks.
"He'll cease to be." Rae says simply. "At least... THIS sir Daniel will cease to be. Another, happier man will go on in his place. Daniel, my love, is this agreeable?"
Daniel nods weakly. "It would be like a dream come true..."
"Great." Rae hugs him and plants a quick kiss on his forehead. "Let's go, guys." She turns and climbs on the bus, then hesitates. "Who will come and who will stay, my companions? It's not to late to stand down from this venture, and no one will think the less of you for it."
"Listen to her." Chryse whispers to Kay and Mouse. "She sounds just like Lady Raven."
"Good." Ghost says, surprising all three. "It means she'll have some idea of what to do and how to act. I mean... right?"
KaraS -- “No, we all have to go.” Kara says
"If we leave someone in the present and then change the future, what will happen to them? This is, after all, Sir Daniel's mannor house. If Sir Daniel has a different future and never comes here the house might cease to exist. We would obviously never come to a house that didn't exist so we wouldn't know where everybody was. We might never find everybody again."
Everybody looked at Kara in confusion.
Kara sighed. "Just get on the bus with Reagun and the IQs."
"Any trouble?" Rae asked them.
"Obviously not." IQ stated.
Kara borded the bus and waited for everybody else to follow.
kayde -- Within seconds
the bus would blink them very close to Sir Daniel's home. But in the past. As the Scoobs sat down waiting to transport, Kay said, "Wait guys. We can't go marching in there looking like this. We have to be dressed properly. Do we still have enough of the time period clothes to go around? No one will trust us or listen to us if we don't look like them."
JilaCosa -- “Uh, no.” Rae says from her seat...
on the bus. "I only grabbed a couple of outfits and they undoubtedly Aren't what we're going to need."
Kay looks around the bus, seven females including herself. Of course 'ghost wouldn't need appropriate clothing and couldn't wear it even if she had it. Or maybe she could but it might look a bit odd. She was sure that 'ghost would either stay invisible or transform her own ghostly clothing to something suitable. 'Ghost Could when needed to a pretty good imitation of being "alive".
"You're right Rae." Jila agrees. "We're going to need skirts, slips, and pettycoats <chuckle>. What if, once we get there, you and Mouse slip into the clothes that you brought, and then see if you can find a place to buy something for the rest of us."
"hmmm," Rae wrinkles her nose at the thought of shopping for frilly clothes (even though her bathroom was full of the stuff. Remember? kitten found it. lol!) "Kay, those clothes I brought fit you. Why don't you go with Mouse and pick some stuff up for us."
"No problem." Kay giggles. She can well imagine what Rae would or Wouldn't come back with.
"So where do we go from there?" Chryse wonders "Find Sir Daniel and Lady Raven's families? But then what do we do After we find them?"
Raven-Kat -- “Simple...”
Rae says, stretching out on one of the bus seats and rifling through her bag for something. "We dog them, twenty-four/seven, until the wedding. No disgrace, no duel."
"And how the frell are we meant to do that?" Kara asks.
"Um... We'll get jobs in Lady Raven's house." Rae smiles. "Great houses always need more servants. I can be a cook..."
kayde -- Giggleing
at the havock they could possibly create as servants, Kay said, "I know enough about teaching to pass as a governess. Are any of them young enough to still be learning? If not, then, how about a lady in waiting? Is that what it is called?" Then she grinned at Mouse. Shopping. No matter what time period, shopping was fun!
Chryse74 -- “Just as long as...”
"... I don't have to be a chamber maid or scullery wench. I absolutely refuse to do that." says Chryse. "But, I'll try to get hired as a bard first. They will surely need entertainment for the wedding. I don't think you guys'll need to get me clothes for that." She says to Kay and Mouse.
"Yeah, maybe the young Sir Daniel will hire you to serenade his love during a secret rendezous, " says Jila, giggling.
"They need privacy, he won't do that, too much noise, " remarked Rae.
"True, but dinner music is always appreciated." smiled Chryse. She took out her flute and started polishing it.
