The Carlos Borland - Swinkels Story
|
DEATH in the NEVADA dessert
The story I am going to tell you now concerns a former
Dutch BMX racer called CARLOS BORLAND - SWINKELS. I knew Carlos from
the time he started to race BMX bikes in the early '80. He was one of
the first BMX'ers in Holland. His mom was from Spanish decent and his
father Dutch. Carlos was born on March 22nd 1968 in Eindhoven and has
a sister called Carmen. His parents got a divorce and later on his mother
remarried an American by the name of Jimmy Borland. From that time on
Carlos lived with the parent of his father, his Grandfather and mother
mr. and mrs. Swinkels in Eindhoven. |

Later
on that year Carlos moved with his mother Maria Borland-Dominquez to
the USA to live their with his stepfather and his mother. |

dad, Jimmy saw his son die the next day, December 1st at 3.05 hours.
Carlos was the 4th trooper of the Nevada Highway Patrol that died
since its existence in 1949. GD |
Tom Lynch
| It
was my second BMX event this year (2000), that I did go to: the EUROPEAN
CHAMPIONSHIPS in the city of MANDEURE - France. I was very surprised to
meet one of our BMX LEGENDS from England there, acting as trainer/coach
for the English team: TOM LYNCH. |

With his BMX Training Camp LEGEND, Tom is now training BMX riders and even forming future coaches. If you want to know more about this just look for more info on www.legendbmx.co.uk |
|
Professionally
Tom is working as a paramedic in the city of London. Just recently he
has been selected for a special test case. To be able to reach patients
more quickly in the centre of London, Tom has been given a special prepared
Cannondale mountainbike with essential equipment on board, to respond
around the Trafalgar and Leicester Squares to potentially life-threatening
calls and also incidents where it is thought unlikely that anyone will
end up being taken to hospital. |

| Those
of you who have a moto-cross back-ground or interest, probably know that
a Belgium moto-cross Grand Prix rider did win his 4th. WORLD CHAMP 500 cc
title on a KTM during the famous Namur - Belgium 500cc Grand Prix this year.
The name of the rider... JOEL SMETS (31). By the way, recently Joël got a sponsorship deal with GT-Bicycles. Want to know way? Read on! |
|
| old photo | What most of you might not know is that Joël has been a BMX racer from the early days. Just the other day, on Belgium Sports TV they showed a video-tape of JOEL SMETS racing on a BMX bike during an event at Zonhoven in Belgium on October 25th 1979. He was interviewed for a sportprogram called SPORTTRIBUNE and give a demonstration wheely riding! |
| Nowadays JOEL still is very actif in BMX. He is boardmember of the local club of his town and helped design the new track in Dessel and will open this track October 4th. 2000. The President of the BMX 2000 DESSEL club is Fank Smets a former BMX rider and now BMX trainer for his club. Frank got Joel seriously involved in BMX again some years ago. A lot of publicity around the opening of the DESSEL BMX track. Among the celebrities being present beside Joel Smets are Sven Nijs, Bart Wellens, Fillip Mairhagen, Johan Boonen, Stefan Everts, Wilfried Peeters and yours truly. Will Joël's 5 year old son Greg follow in his footsteps? |
Pieter Does

Still
racing, but could also be called an Old skool BMX racer as well, because
he races as long as there has been BMX in Holland and Europe (1979). PIETER
DOES (26) has been appointed General Manager of airfilter production company
Twin Air,
part of the American Boyesen company ( moto-cross parts assecoires etc.)
|
|
Besides
runing the production plant, Pieter takes care of sponsoring of major moto-cross
factory teams with the Twin Air products. Bad luck did strick when early
this year the complete plant burned down. Within 3 weeks Pieter had the
production going in a temporary production unit and right now a new factory
is being built. |
|
|
Testing
filters belongs to the job and riding motorbikes and yet-ski's are therefore
obligatory.

| Just
the other day Pieter signed a one year contract with WEBCO-Mentos
team for 2001. Probably this will be Pieter's last season as
active BMX racers. |

Also
present in Mandeure - France during the European Championships were
father and son SCHADOWSKI from Germany.
I just received the invitation; the 3th. BMX-VETARANEN-CUP + " KING
of DIRT " will take place on October 1st in Weiterstadt - Germany. |

|
Besides
former and present BMX racers present, also officials were invited, like
the AFB's first president Raymond Imbert and introducer of BMX in France
Alain Koligowski as well as promotor of the first hour Rene Nicolas. Want
