So you want to be a computer programmer? Well firstly you have to be literate in MS DOS. If you are, you probably know a fair bit about what programming languages there are, and what they are used for. For instance, you might have heard of visual basic. This is used to make quite easy windows .exe programs. You may have heard of C or C++. These are very complex languages, and no matter how brainy you are should you 'dive into the deep end' and attempt to learn this as you first language. You need to become literate in the basics of computer languages, and to do this, I strongly recommend that if you are new to programming, you should learn Qbasic (Quick Basic). This is a brilliant language for the begginer. It was created in 1975 by guess who?? Bill Gates and Paul Allen. Since then, it has been made better, and allows you to make DOS executable files. The English like commands are another bonus. For example: to put some writing on the screen, all you do is type 'PRINT'. Qbasic also introduces you to all programming concepts. So, to conclude Qbasic, I would say that it's a brilliant language for the first time programmer. And it's not just for learning so that you can move on to more complex lancguages like C, you can also make some brilliant programs. You can find Qbasic on your windows CD-ROM, but to download the latest version (4.5) in a zip file, then click here. There is a great Qbasic site created by David Zohrob, where there are loads of example files and some great tutorials he is writing himself. The address of the site is: www.qbasic.com. The site also contains loads of great links. After Qbasic, you might want to expand you knowledge to Visual basic, and then after that...who knows - once you have learnt one programming language, it isn't really hard to learn another. In fact, I would say that if you were to be literate in Qbasic, you could learn C++, or any other language in about a week. Well I've told you what to do to become a brilliant programmer, so when you invent a revolutionary program and become a billionaire, remember who got you started. Any (sensible) questions, please fill in the form here. Another great Qbasic site is the Qbasic links page with 220 links to other QBasic sites. Click here to go there Do you have a good programming site? If you do, you might want to have it listed here.
