Overall

Godzilla is a fighting game for the PC-Engine. It can be played in 1P story mode, where you must face the monsters in turn, or 2P versus mode where you and a friend (or enemy) can slug it out with Godzilla and/or any of the beasts you have defeated in the 1P mode - this provides an incentive for the 1P mode !

Gameplay is quite unlike any other fighting game; with you having to choose Godzilla's path through the levels - for in one game you will not face all of the monsters. Each stage you have to make a selection of which monster to fight - the heavier and taller monsters being stronger and harder to defeat, but giving more points when they are defeated.

You need to score as many points as you can with this game, as the harder, and later boss monsters (such as Super Mecha Godzilla and Mecha King Ghidorah) are only selectable when you have accumulated enough points.

You have unlimited continues to accomplish this task, but each continue you use takes away 50000 points!

Graphics wise, Godzilla varies from quite good to excellent, most times being very good.
The characters are all faithful to their original movie screen images, and having a large repertoire of moves - Godzilla rules with his fire breath!
One criticism that can be said is even though the chracters are well drawn and many moves they are not as smooth as, say SF2, they are not jerky however, but niehter are they silky smooth.
On the whole though, they are very good, with large sprites and (in most stages) multiple planes of parallax scrolling, and scrolling of the main screen area (quite cool).

Sounds are incredible, the music is straight out of a movie, with an excellent dramatic score accompanying each level, music featured on inter-level scenes is also flawless. Digital sound effects, such as Godzilla's roar, and the trademark noises of other creatures are reproduced quite faithfully. 'Everyday' effects such as punch sounds, bleeps, and injuries are satisfactory.

You'll find that Godzilla is quite a easy game to get to grips with, but is hard to get the higher scores  that you "want", you'll keep coming back to it, I promise - plus there's always the 2 player mode to keep you going; which is usually the best part of a fighting game.
