The PCEngine was a console released in the late 80's that survived
up into late 1995. The machine had a 16bit graphics processor and could
display up to 512 colours at the same time - more than the MD/Genesis and
such like could - it had a CD attatchment, and could be upgraded with 'system'
cards to over 2Mbytes of memory! Though it was never officially released
in Europe, American and Japanese machines were available through importers
and it is posssible to still get hold of them - there are over a dozen
different configurations of machine though.
NEC's PCFX console was introduced in late 1994, it is a pure 32bit
machine. It is CD based and has a fast (for a console) double speed drive.
It was released in Japan only.
Sadly, though both machines were truly innovative, they were both discontinued
- it seems marketing is not a strong point of NEC. If you are interested
in either, then now is the time to buy - there are few PCEngine systems
left, and prices are starting to rise because of this. And PCFX systems
are being sold at clearance prices in Japanese stores. |
