        Wingate

Wingate is a program by Deerfield Communication that allows for a split connection where you can connect 2 computers with a modem. Connection Aggregation is the sharing of internet connection. Misconfiguration in Wingate is the main cause where unauthorised access can be obtained. The problem lies in System Admins themselves who poorly configure their systems where port 23 (telnet proxy) is the biggest threat for the server. Proxy servers can be secured by running Gatekeeper to lock and block the ports that are considered to be vulnerable to attacks to gain unauthorised access.

23 - Telnet Proxy Server
1080 - Identify a SOCKS Proxy to scan for a Wingate
6667 - IRC Mapping

The above ports can be locked to disable bouncing to an IRC server. There are IRC scripts that are able to detect connections from a Wingate proxy. Refer to above links for a more detail information about the use of Wingate and how to secure your server by running Gatekeeper.
