Convocation Open Day
The open day that was held during the first convocation on 7-9th August 1997
was a grand celebration with great fan-fare. In conjunction with the convocation,
the new UNIMAS Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences building was officially opened
by the Chief Minister of Sarawak and Protem Chancellor of UNIMAS, Dato' Taib Mahmuud. In wake of this significant event, the UNIMAS Medical Society organized an open clinic
for the students as well as the public. The clinic was held for four days and handled by
UNIMAS medical students of all years as well as lecturers and staff. UNIMAS students and
staff were given free tests while the public were charged a minimal fee of RM 2.00 per
person. Tests ranged from taking blood pressure to checking the glucose, albumin,
cholesterol and haemoglobin levels in the blood. Other tests also included the smoking
test as well as blood typing. Besides the open clinic that was held, a smoking clinic was held to inform the public
of the dangers of smoking. Brochures and hand-outs were given along with free advice.
An exhibition of charts and posters from various researchs that were conducted by lecturers
and students were also put up on display. One of the reseachs was about dengue fever in
Sarawak while another was about the living and sanitary conditions in a village in Sarawak. Preserved models as well as anatomical models that are part of the medical student's
learning aids were also put on display during the open day. Visitors were entertained with
information of each model depending whether they were specific body organs or pathological
features of a disease. Multimedia also played a major part in the exhibition. Computers equipped with CDROMs were
used to demonstrate various medical literature and programmes that were available to the
medical students of UNIMAS as part of their learning aids. Laser discs with features on
pathology were also presented during the exhibition.
